| ~ Shou Tucker when Ed calls him out on turning his own daughter into a chimera. |
Shou Tucker (ショウ・タッカー Shō Takkā) is a minor antagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise.
He is a State Alchemist who is known for creating a talking Chimera, and is visited by two main heroes Edward and Alphonse Elric. During the brothers' visit in his estate, they uncover the horrifying truth behind his work, leading him to be placed under house arrest and killed by Scar.
He was voiced by Makoto Nagai in the Japanese version, and Chuck Huber in the English dubbed version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Two years prior, he used his own devoted wife to create a talking agonized chimera simply to become an alchemist, which is more or less an act against nature. The tormented chimera that was once Mrs. Tucker was sent to a science facility where she eventually stopped eating and died just to end her own misery. He then lied to Nina about her mother leaving them.
- He uses his own loving daughter Nina and his dog Alexander to create another chimera in order to keep his alchemy license. The Alexander/Nina Chimera is left in a constant state of agony due to the transformation.
- Although his wife, daughter and dog never get killed by the experimentations, their state is still depicted as a fate worse than death in-universe.
- Additionally, even from a purely scientific perspective, there was no point to him turning Nina and Alexander into a chimera, as the military had managed to transmute healthy chimeras capable of shifting between animal hybrid and human forms at will, while Nina and Alexander, like Tucker's wife, were turned into a warped, flawed creature in constant torment.
- It is implied that he has turned other humans into chimeras, judging from how the camera pans around his lab during the reveal of him turning Nina into a chimera.
- While he and his family used to be impoverished and he feared they would become so again if he lost his job, the fact that he sacrifices his family to avoid this makes it clear that he only cares about himself, and it does not make him tragic at all. Furthermore, if he truly cared about his family, he would've tried to find a new job instead of sacrificing his family for personal gain.
- He shows no remorse for his crimes and does not take any responsibility when he is confronted by Edward and Alphonse Elric. He calls out Ed for expressing disgust towards him, taunting and gaslighting him by saying that he was no different (this argument really doesn't hold much weight since he didn't use alchemy out of altruism unlike the Elrics who want to resurrect their mother).
- He continues to display no remorse even after the Nina chimera protects him from Edward by pitifully pleading on her father's behalf. While under house arrest, he asks himself why nobody's capable of understanding him and displays zero gratitude towards Nina for saving his life.
- His actions are so cruel that Scar, a serial killer targeting State Alchemists, is absolutely disgusted by him to the point where he mercilessly kills him and even kills Nina for the sake of putting an end to her misery as well.
- While other villains like Father, Solf J. Kimblee, the Homunculi and the Gold Toothed Doctor are worse and have massive kill counts, Tucker has way less resources than aforementioned villains since he's a normal man with limited alchemy skills, while Father is a deity, Kimblee is an Amestrian mlitary officer and an agent of Homunculus, the Homunculi have super powers and are skilled fighters, and the Gold Toothed Doctor is a high-ranking researcher in the state military who leads a whole research team working for him, which provides them with enough resources to commit crimes on a higher scale.
- His actions have a devastating impact on the Elric brothers (especially Alphonse), as after witnessing Tucker's actions, Alphonse makes a promise not to allow anybody else to die no matter what happens to him.
Trivia[]
- Each collection of the manga concludes with a small omake panel showing the characters of note that had died within the contained chapters. Tucker holds the distinction of being shown going to Hell as opposed to every other character, including savage and evil characters like Envy and Gluttony, going to Heaven. This demonstrates how even the author views Shou Tucker with such disgust and regarded him as truly vile, which drives the point of him being Pure Evil even further.
- While the manga and 2009 anime version of Shou Tucker is Pure Evil and was shown to have no redeeming qualities, his 2003 anime version ultimately shows remorse for his actions and even tries to redeem himself.
- The English dub of the 2009 anime also makes a small but notable dialogue change as when his daughter asks what he's going to do, he thinks to himself that he must do this "or we'll be left with nothing again" which changes his motives somewhat by hinting he delusionally thinks his actions will benefit her.
- Tucker is one of the only Fullmetal Alchemist villains who is more heinous than their 2003 counterpart.
