It's like a furnace in here!
~ The Shapeshifter's catchphrase.
Oh, this? I proposed to Hughie this morning! I even told him the story about your dead grandparents. And then we f-cked to celebrate, and we did butt stuff; he was so into it!
~ The Shifter taunting Starlight about raping Hughie
Annie: You're a psychopath.
Shifter:
SOCIOPATH... which is to be expected, really. I mean, I barely remember what I look like. I do remember the first time I shifted, though. One minute I was me, and the next I was Ms. Jameson, my preschool teacher. And I could see every memory she ever had. F*cking her husband's best friend, shoplifting lip gloss, hitting a student. But you know what the funny part is? She felt justified in doing all those shitty things. You all do it. You all think you're the heroes of your own story.
~ The Shapeshifter talking to the kidnapped Starlight.

The Shapeshifter, also known simply as the Shifter, is a major antagonist in Season 4 of the 2019 Amazon TV adaptation comic book series The Boys.

Given the ability to shapeshift into anyone they touch, this sociopathic Shapeshifter was supposedly hired to assassinate the President-elect of the United States, Robert Singer, under Sister Sage's orders in order to put Victoria Neuman, and by extension, Homelander to power. It is later revealed that their inclusion in Sage's plan had a deeper purpose than just assassination.

They were portrayed by Erin Moriarty as Starlight, Naomi Frenette as an unnamed woman, Sarah D. McCarthy as Karen, and Eddy Kaye as the Shady Man.

What Makes Them Pure Evil?[]

  • Though they were driven to villainy by learning the darkest secrets of their preschool teacher and thus all of humanity coupled with being unable to transform back into their true self, it doesn't even close to justifying their actions at all and the Shifter openly admits to being evil for the sake of it.
  • Despite supervillains like Homelander and Stormfront doing worse deeds, the Shifter only has a dingy hut and whatever resources Sage provided them to fulfill the task.
  • Was willingly hired by Sister Sage to assassinate President-elect Robert “Dakota Bob” Singer.
  • Attempted to frame Starlight for the assassination of Singer by impersonating her.
  • It is strongly implied they killed the woman they were impersonating, along with her husband.
  • Pretended to be a prisoner and slashed Hughie Campbell's hand with a knife when he was off guard.
  • Assumed the identity of an old woman to escape from Butcher, Hughie, and Annie.
  • Drugged Annie at a bar after taking a selfie with her to obtain her DNA.
  • Dragged Annie to a rundown building and chained her up, only scarcely feeding her and going out of her way to psychologically torture her for ten days straight.
  • Used Annie's appearance to rape Hughie around twenty times over the course of ten days, with Hughie being horrified upon realizing the Shifter's deception.
  • Manipulated Hughie into a fake engagement using a sob story about Annie’s grandparents.
  • Deleted Hughie's blackmail against Victoria Neuman, forcing The Boys to take defensive measures.
  • Tormented Annie by gloating about raping Hughie and claiming that Annie is just as rotten as them.
  • Recorded Singer to frame him for the impending death of Victoria Neuman.
  • Threw Hughie and M.M. into a wall during the attack on the CIA facility.
  • Brutally killed Singer's guards during their assassination attempt:
    • Used a golf club to brutally kill a security guard by bashing his skull even after he was clearly dead.
    • Threw a security guard against a desk, snapping his spine in half.
    • Impaled a soldier on a wall-mounted coat rack, leaving her body hanging on the wall.
    • Bit out the throat of another guard and savored the taste of his blood.
  • Snapped Kimiko Miyashiro’s neck during a brutal scuffle.
  • Tormented Hughie by forcing him to shoot at them while still disguised as Annie, knowing it would be traumatizing for him.
  • Their actions have a posthumous effect on the story, as while they failed to kill Singer, the Shifter still played their part by framing him and having him arrested. This allowed Homelander to take over the country and imprison most members of The Boys.
