“ | Hey, Spidey, you know what blows? Half the city if you don't find all the bombs. Ha-hah! | „ |
~ Screwball telling Spider-Man that half of the city will blow up if he doesn't finish her challenges. |
Screwball is a minor antagonist in the main game and a major antagonist in The City That Never Sleeps DLC of the 2018 superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man, the first installent of the Insomniac's eponymous video game series.
She is an egotistical and selfish snuff filmer that aspires to gain popularity worldwide, so she takes to kidnapping civilians and setting up challenges all across New York to blackmail Spider-Man into participating in them with the threat of something bad happening if he doesn't do as she asks as a way of gaining popularity through his involvement. At the end of the DLC, she is eventually imprisoned by Spider-Man and taken back to prison just like what happened previously, only it being a much longer sentence this time around.
She was voiced by Stephanie Lemelin.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
- She forced Spider-Man to participate in her first challenge to rescue a kidnapped civilian by threatening that they'll suffocate if he doesn't. Though the kidnapped civilian turns out to be Screwball herself, her fans end up attacking Spider-Man on sight and she does nothing to stop this.
- Feeling like she didn't have the fame that she deserved, she came up with a plan to get famous through forcing Spider-Man to participate in numerous challenges she sets across the course of three seasons. The challenges get progressively more lethal and dangerous as they go on, which include:
- Going through gadget challenges where he has to fight off against Screwball's henchmen while some of his gadgets are disabled.
- Having her fans launch ambushes on him in multiple waves.
- Planting EMP's all across New York or else they would cause a city wide power outage if he didn't participate. If he destroyed them in the wrong order, they would painfully shock him.
- Doing stealth challenges where he needed to stealthily defeat all of the enemies or else any civilian hostages involved would be killed.
- Planting bombs all across New York that have the potential to blow up half of the city if he doesn't destroy them all in time.
- When Spider-Man chases after her, she plants bombs on 2 rooftops populated by her fans to distract him, willingly risking dozens of lives for her own sake.
- She doesn't care that her challenges can attract the attention of Hammerhead's men, who have been shown to be extremely dangerous.
- She is extremely narcissistic and selfish, not caring who she endangers with her stunts and forces Spider-Man to partake in her challenges even after he hit a rough patch in his relationship with Yuri Watanabe.
- Although she gives an aspiring streamer some advice on what to do, it doesn't hold up in the end as it is could very easily just be pragmatic as to not lose any face in front of her fans. Not to mention Screwball shows she doesn't care about the wellbeing of her fans' lives when she endangers them just to escape Spider-Man.
- While Spider-Man points out her being a victim to her own fanbase as they will continuously encourage her to keep up with her affairs, this in no way excuses her actions but merely shows how much a pathetic narcissist she truly is.
- Despite the high Heinous Standards of the series, Screwball stands out with her minimal resources compared to other villains like Hammerhead, Simon Krieger, and Kraven the Hunter. She also manages to stand out for her high attempted kill count and her unique crime of snuff filming which no one else shares. Plus, she is so heinous for a villain with her low resources that she out-heinouses Scorpion, causing him to be Near Pure Evil in spite of lacking redeeming qualities.
Trivia[]
- She wouldn't have been able to qualify as Pure Evil if not for The City that never Sleeps DLC, as the stunts she pulled in the main game weren't enough to help her stand out.
