~ Scar revealing his true nature to Mufasa before murdering him, and his most infamous quote. |
Taka, better known as Scar, is the main antagonist of the 2019 musical drama film The Lion King, a photorealistic computer-animated remake of the 1994 traditionally animated classic film of the same name, and will return as the deuteragonist of its upcoming 2024 prequel/sequel Mufasa: The Lion King.
He is a lustful, envious, ambitious and megalomaniacal African lion who acts as the temporary king of Pride Rock, the adoptive brother and murderer of Mufasa and the adoptive uncle and archenemy of Simba. He is also based off his original incarnation with the same name.
In the first film, he was voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor. In the 2024 prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, he will be voiced by Kelvin Harrison Jr.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- While the novelization gives Scar a sympathetic origin whereby Scar felt rejected, ostracized and neglected by his father for refusing to take him on hunts due to considering his own son a failure and therefore forcing him to overexert himself into living up to his expectations of him and making him proud to earn the royal title as king which unfortunately resulted in getting himself hurt and wounded frequently in the process thus earning his title as Scar for his failure and humiliation and thus living in the shadow of his brother Mufasa and achieving what he felt was destined for, he's still far past it as he took out this trauma on his own nephew and attempted to kill him even though he had nothing to do with it.
- He isn't even grateful that Mufasa let him live in the pride even when he knows they are on bad terms.
- Went as far as to kill his own older brother out of revenge for making him an outcast in his childhood so he could steal his throne and hated his own nephew Simba because due to his birth causing him to lose the chance of earning the throne which made him miss out on his ceremony.
- He even went out of his way to harm his nephew Simba and even attempted to kill him twice after Mufasa's death.
- Although Simba as a cub loved Scar and would tell him stories, Scar did not bother to listen and only pretended to be kind to manipulate the child for his own needs.
- He nearly ate Zazu alive (after he came to inform him that Mufasa was on his way) out of spite and sadistic pleasure rather than hunger, while this could be justified as Zazu distracted him causing the mouse he was trying to eat to flee, it still doesn't excuse it as it was completely unintentional and Zazu even told him that it's forbidden to eat a member of the king's court.
- He later even banished Zazu from the Pride Lands after usurping the throne.
- He tricked Simba into going to the Elephant Graveyard, where he planned to have the hyenas slay him and Nala.
- When Mufasa begged him for help during the wildebeest stampede, he scratched him in the face to cause him to fall to his death.
- He later accused Simba of Mufasa's death just to emotionally spite the cub while "comforting" him, despite knowing his nephew had nothing to do with his brother's death. He then banished him from the Pride Lands and ordered the hyenas to kill him to cover his tracks further.
- He nearly turned the Pride Lands into a barren wasteland, causing damage and death that spread beyond the horizon.
- Watches the Hyenas overhunt and kill animals and shows no remorse when called out by Sarabi.
- He possessed a lust for Sarabi just because he was denied her affections. While the animated version was implied to possess such feelings, this version is confirmed to do so.
- After becoming the new king, Scar told Sarabi to get over Mufasa's death without a hint of sensitivity, showing no concern about her emotions. He even harasses Sarabi nonstop into being his queen, and when she refuses, he orders that the lions will eat after the hyenas, knowing that they "leave little behind" to spite Sarabi for refusing his offer.
- This shows that he has zero concern of the pride's well-being.

He even harasses Sarabi nonstop into being his queen, and when she refuses, he orders that the lions will eat after the hyenas, knowing that they "leave little behind" to spite Sarabi for refusing his offer.
- After Sarabi told him that he was nothing compared to Mufasa, he attacked her and presumably tried to kill her (despite the fact he once loved her), and he would have succeeded if Simba had not intervened.
- Upon learning that Simba is still alive and wanting to claim the throne, he attempted to stop him from doing so by continuing to blame him for Mufasa's death.
- Furthermore, he and the hyenas backed him to the edge of Pride Rock, (while repeatedly asking whether or not he is the king) where lightning struck and caused a wildfire. He then taunted Simba over the similarity between it and Mufasa's final moments.
- Afterwards he proceeded to attempt to kill his nephew the same way he killed his brother (albeit by throwing his victim into fire instead of a stampede) but not before bragging to the former about having done it, which led to him being exposed in retaliation. He even tried to call Simba a liar and the true murderer of Mufasa just to continue his reign.

- He ordered the hyenas to kill Simba and the entire lion pride after his lies were exposed by Sarabi and Simba.
- While it is clear that Scar, unlike his original counterpart, made good on his promise to the hyenas by overseeing hunts for them to gain their genuine loyalty, this went down the drain when he attempted to put the blame on the hyenas when cornered by Simba, proving that he was just using the hyenas as pawns in a more pragmatic way; even Simba calls him out on it.
- He even pretends to begging his nephew for mercy after being cornered by him. Additionally, it's made clear that his act of allowing the hyenas to eat before the lionesses is done solely out of spite towards Sarabi for refusing to be his queen instead of honor.
- After Simba chose to spare Scar and instead send him into exile, Scar tried to slay him unfairly by throwing burning embers into his eyes before attacking him so he'd have the advantage (while this could be justified as Simba is more muscular and younger than him and he maybe knows that he can't defeat him in a fair fight)
- When cornered by the hyenas (who overheard his treacherous words) after being defeated by Simba, Scar attempted to talk his way out of it by admitting that he was trying to fool Simba. But when the hyenas refused to accept this, Scar attempted to attack the hyenas, proving that he was not trying to fool Simba and really was planning on killing them all once they had served his purpose, (While this could be totally justififed considering that they refused to believe him and attacked him first , making his act purely out of self defense)
- Though he gets a very gruesome death at the jaws of the hyenas, he's more than deserved it for his treatment towards them.
- While he doesn't abuse the hyenas unlike his original counterpart , there is no indication that he see them nothing more than pawns even before they turn against him.
Trivia[]
- Though he is Pure Evil like his original incarnation, this version of Scar is much more effective and serious, and thus more evil than him (before the original Scar was resurrected in The Lion Guard, that is). While the original Scar has a couple comedic moments (which don't detract from his heinous deeds) and made several promises he didn't keep with the hyenas, the remake Scar lacks any comical moments and also kept the promises he did to the hyenas while being prorated dead serious in universe. In this version Scar is portrayed a bit more sympathetically since he was an outcast and hated his own brother, not just out of jealousy but also because he was always in the shadows of him therefore painting him as a somewhat sympathetic character while the previous Scar was purely power-hungry and only cared about the throne. Also, unlike the original Scar who is considered cowardly in nature, the remake Scar is a lot less cowardly as even though he is not above in begging for mercy, he is somewhat brave enough to fight back against his foes if necessary.
- While Scar is currently Pure Evil just like his original counterpart, there's a possibility that this may change if his backstory gets further fleshed out and gains any positive qualities in the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King prequel/sequel film, as Scar's "young and sweet" relationship with Mufasa has been confirmed to be explored.
- That being said, it is entirely possible that Scar's relationship will be depicted as nice initially, but the relationship will then deteriorate with time, which means that while it is possible Scar will have redeeming/mitigating qualities, the movie will very likely also go out of its way to show Scar subverted them, meaning that Scar will likely stay Pure Evil regardless of how the movie depicts him. However, he could still be disqualified, becoming Near Pure Evil, if his backstory ends up being too sympathetic for him to stay and he may possible blame Mufasa for his mother’s death.
- Despite this, Scar's actor has confirmed that this nicer phase of Scar's life occurred when he was a child, meaning it is entirely possible he will actually start out nice as a child, only to then become more jealous and cold as he gets older, meaning he will go through an arc similar to his original incarnation, where the original Scar, while still quite arrogant, was implied to have been noble before jealously and desire for the throne caused him to subvert all of his positive qualities, meaning this Scar, should such an arc play out, will likely stay Pure Evil no matter what, as actions shown during childhood generally don't get villains disqualified from the Pure Evil status.
