~ Sabbac to Black Adam. |
Ishmael Gregor, also known as Sabbac, is the main antagonist of the 2022 DC Extended Universe film Black Adam.
He was a member of the Intergang who sought to obtain the Crown of Sabbac in order to take over Kahndaq and is the descendant of its former ruler, King Ahk-Ton.
He was portrayed by Marwan Kenzari, who also played Ahk-Ton in the same film and Jafar in the live-action Aladdin remake.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He secretly allied with Intergang to find the Crown of Sabbac, which his friend Adrianna Tomaz, her son Amon, and her brother Karim wanted to find in hopes of using it to drive Intergang out of Kahndaq, get the Crown's powers for himself, and take over the world in the name of King Ahk-Ton, his ruthless and merciless ancestor.
- He had Adrianna's friend Samir killed just as she and he found the Crown of Sabbac in Black Adam's tomb.
- He shot one of his men dead simply by punching him to make him look like a victim.
- He goes back to the Tomaz residence after Black Adam's reawakening and holds his former friends at gunpoint, revealing himself to be the mastermind behind Intergang's attempts to find the Crown, kidnapping Amon to use him as a hostage and shooting Karim to incapacitate him from following them.
- He labeled the Justice Society as foreign invaders, whom he hypocritically berates Black Adam for siding with despite Ishmael’s involvement with the Intergang, the real invaders.
- He nearly shoots Amon after threatening Black Adam and the Justice Society of America into giving him the Crown of Sabbac, despite them doing exactly what he ordered, though fortunately, like Karim, Amon survived.
- After being resurrected as Sabbac after Black Adam kills him for hurting Amon, he decides to unleash "Hell on Earth" by summoning multiple skeleton minions as his army and letting them free into Kahndaq to cause as much chaos and death as possible.
- While one can see his wish to avenge King Ahk-Ton as him honoring his ancestor, it's somewhat ambiguous if Sabbac does really care for his ancestry or if he just uses this motivation as an excuse to retrieve the Crown of Sabbac and reclaim his once royal heritage by unleashing an Armageddon. Either way, Ahk-Ton never deserved to be honored in the first place.
- He killed Doctor Fate while trying to kill Hawkman and the rest of the Justice Society, even nearly tearing Hawkman’s wings off.
- He destroyed a statue in an attempt to kill Amon and dozens of citizens for standing up and resisting him.
- He tried to kill Black Adam one last time, resulting in his own well-deserved death.
- While there have been bigger threats in the DCEU, Sabbac still stands out, as his goals and the effects of those goals are shown in much more detail. He sells out his own country due to the Intergang being responsible for a lot of deaths and corruption. He tries to kick-start the End Times on his own volition and makes it clear that he would hurt a child. We are also shown a vision from Doctor Fate of what the world looked like when Sabbac won, and it was not pretty.
- Overall, his actions were so bad that the Justice Society were ultimately willing to let Black Adam destroy him despite their no-kill code.
