“ | You feel the air? That's fear. Soon, there'll be death. | „ |

“ | I don't want prisoners. I want bodies. | „ |
~ Ryker to his men before starting his attack on every island in the Barbaric Archipelago. |
Ryker Grimborn is a major antagonist in the Netflix exclusive DreamWorks Animation series Dragons: Race to the Edge, part of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, serving as the secondary antagonist of Seasons 2 to 4, and a posthumous antagonist in Seasons 5 and 6.
He is the viler older brother of Viggo Grimborn who lacks his sense of pragmatism & honor and is more reliant in brute strength. Originally having cared for his family, Ryker outright abandons it by usurping Viggo and attempting to kill him to take control over the Dragon Hunters himself.
He was voiced by JB Blanc.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Made many attempts to kill the Dragon Riders and their allies.
- Like Viggo, he doesn’t care for his own men like when he threatened to kill the Fight Master before he brought Toothless into the fighting ring and when Ryker got a fishing boat infected with the Scourge of Odin.
- As Viggo's chief lieutenant, he actively led the entire Dragon Hunters operations, having dragons captured, enslaved and tortured before being killed or sold for parts.
- He also heavily assists in many of Viggo's vilest schemes, such as:
- Helping spread the Scourge of Odin epidemic and capture the Buffalord to profit off the cure, even threatening to kill the Buffalord to force Hiccup to surrender.
- Imprisoning the Submaripper in Berk's trade routes to prevent traders from arriving on Berk and starve it, and capturing the Eruptadon.
- Dooming Caldera Cay to destruction by depriving it of the only thing that could protect them from the threat of the active volcano on their island.
- He also heavily assists in many of Viggo's vilest schemes, such as:
- Personally operated his own operation for money, capturing multiple dragons and forcing them all to duel to the death, with the reigning champion being a Triple Stryke named Sleuther, who killed so many the matches were over right before they began, and people were getting bored, and less revenue was being made.
- After ultimately betraying Viggo, he hijacks Project Shellfire to bomb every last island on the Barbaric Archipelago to purge it of all life.
- Due to the scope of the franchise for most of the story being concentrated at the Barbaric Archipelago before the second film, Ryker is the closest the entire franchise has to a full-blown omnicidal maniac. It is even stated some Berserkers died during Ryker's test assault on Berserker Island.
- While he initially cared about his family and has standards against harming them, refusing to betray his brother and kill him even though he easily could and was offended when Dagur the Deranged called his cousin Lars #2 expendable for deserting the attack on the Edge, Ryker outright abandons such standards by betraying his brother and attempting to kill him, with his relationship with his cousin not being explained much more following the throw away joke scene he was mentioned in, and considering what happens in Season 4, is far too vague to be truly redeeming.
- In addition it was stated that Ryker fears his brother, and as such his loyalty to Viggo was mostly out of fear.
Trivia[]
- Ryker Grimborn is, alongside Krogan, one of the two How to Train Your Dragon Pure Evils to be a TV show-exclusive character.
- Ryker Grimborn bears a strong resemblance to one concept art of Drago Bludvist, who is also Pure Evil, when Drago was just called Darko.
