Repeat this after me, I'll never take on a god again!
~ Rugal Bernstein

Rugal Bernstein is the main antagonist in the first two King of Fighters games and the dream match games and a recurring antagonist throughout the series. Designed with the intention of creating the strongest and most evil boss character for the series and perhaps SNK as a whole, he is seen as one of the most iconic examples of "SNK Boss Syndrome". Despite canonically only appearing in the first two games of the series, his popularity among the fans and developers has cemented his place as a major antagonist in the franchise, appearing in nearly every non-canon game as well as crossovers.

He was voiced by Toshimitsu Arai in most appearances up to Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting, Norio Wakamoto (who also voiced M. Bison in the Street Fighter series and Dio Brando in the drama CD adaption for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders in The King of Fighters 2002, Banjō Ginga in the Dengeki Bunko Drama CD and Tsuguo Mogami in all appearances since The King of Fighters: All Star.

Biography[]

This section is too long. Visit here for more details: Rugal Bernstein's Synopsis on the Villains Wiki.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • After acquiring the Orochi power from Goenitz, he destroyed a military base in Brazil and killed 50 of Heidern's mercenaries just to demonstrate his newfound power.
  • After witnessing Heidern survive the base's destruction, he killed his wife Sandra and his daughter Clara right before the commander's eyes in disappointment, after he tears off one of Heidern's eyes. This gives Heidern enough of a reason to hate Rugal.
  • Turned the fighters he defeated into living trophies to add to his collection, and is proud about it. He also attempted to turn the KOF winners into trophies for the sake of his collection.
  • Attempted to take the KOF victors with him by setting the Black Noah to self-destruct. This shows that Rugal is a sore loser who does not take losing very lightly.
  • Brainwashed Saisyu into attacking Kyo, and when the old man came to his senses, he transformed into Omega Rugal in another attempt to kill Kyo.
  • As the KOF victors call him out on his vile deeds, he took them as words of praise so as to satisfy his ego.
  • Refusing to accept his second defeat as Omega Rugal, he attempted to siphon more Orochi power only for it to kill him from the inside.
  • He shows to be pretty sadistic towards his henchmen and victims, as he thinks that the sound of broken bones and people screaming in pain as if it were soothing music to his ears.
  • Sees justice as nothing but illusions, and evil as the only reality that exists and drives the world into what it is today.
  • All in all, for every evil deed he's done, he shows zero remorse for it and will just be proud of what he's done in the name of evil itself. He also likened his murder of humans to that of swatting a fly, while not feeling guilty about it.

Trivia[]

  • Along with Goenitz and Clone Zero, Rugal is one of the three antagonists from the King of Fighters franchise who are considered pure evil.
