“ | Our order has been developing it for many, many years. And it wasn't until recently that it was perfected... by my own flesh... and blood. My family and I are honored to operate as a service to members of our group. Don't waste your strength, don't try to fight it. You can't stop the inevitable. And who knows? (chuckles) Maybe one day, you'll enjoy... being members... of the family! Behold... the Coagula. | „ |
~ Roman introducing the Order of the Coagula. |
Roman Armitage is the overarching antagonist of the 2017 horror movie Get Out.
He is the leader of the Order of the Coagula, the patriarch of the Armitage Family. the husband of Marianne Armitage, the father of Dean Armitage, the father-in-law of Missy Armitage and the grandfather of Jeremy and Rose Armitage.
In his normal body, he was portrayed by the late Richard Herd, who also voiced Father Elijah in Fallout: New Vegas. While possessing Walter, he was portrayed by Marcus Henderson.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He believed African Americans had certain physical attributes that white people don't have and developed a prejudice against them just because he lost to Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics.
- He subjected African Americans to the Sunken Place, where their brains are transplanted by those of white people so the latter could gain pseudo-immortality.
- He had his son Dean learn how to become a neurosurgeon to continue his dark legacy and even had his own brain transplanted into the family's groundskeeper Walter and used Walter's body to make himself more agile as the Order of the Coagula was doing their unethical procedures against African Americans.
- While the Armitage family are happy together in Roman's propaganda video, it was only because of their shared prejudice against blacks, and it was because of Roman's influence that his family started to treat blacks as less than human. When attacking Chris along with his granddaughter Rose, Roman does not acknowledge the corpses of his wife Marianne, his son Dean, his daughter-in-law Missy or his grandson Jeremy, even though they are well within his field of vision. This shows that Roman did not genuinely care for his family as anything more than tools to promote his cult. Furthermore, he didn't care whether they love him or not, because his hatred for blacks was so intense that hurting them was more important to him than being loved.
- His host, Walter, upon temporarily resurfacing thanks to Chris, is forced to kill himself to prevent Roman from ever coming back after shooting Rose dead. Furthermore, as Walter shot both Roman and Rose with their shotgun, he will be likely blamed for their deaths by the public and posthumously scorned.
Trivia[]
- Jordan Peele, who was the director and writer of Get Out, confirmed that Roman's final line was supposed to be "I finally beat you, Jesse!" while attacking Chris. If this was implemented into the movie, it would further show that Roman has no genuine care for his family and is more focused on a petty grudge.
