~ Rolo introducing the Black Museum

Rolo Haynes is the main antagonist of the Black Mirror season 4 episode "Black Museum". The owner and curator of the eponymous Black Museum, he has made a business of collecting authentic criminological artifacts from across the world and putting them on display at his tourist trap exhibition. While he first appears to be a quirky but relatively harmless showman, it soon becomes apparent that he occasionally played a direct role in the origins of items that he has collected - and that his collection isn't limited to inanimate objects, either.

He was portrayed by Douglas Hodge.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • For years, Rolo Haynes presumably had been making deals with down on their luck or desperate individuals in order to sell his experiments to them, uncaring of the disastrous consequences towards them that could potentially lead to their deaths.
  • While still working in St. Juniper’s, he perfected a neural implant to be used to feel the pain of others, using it on a rat to test it out before simply dissecting the rat.
  • He convinced doctor Peter Dawson to use the implant to help with diagnosing patients, however, after Dawson blacked out due to experiencing a patients death, he became addicted to pain and began self mutilating himself before brutally murdering a homeless man, rending Dawson in so much pain he went into a coma, all of which Rolo shows complete apathy for causing.
  • Approached a man named Jack and convinced him to transfer the consciousness into his comatose wife Carrie for her to feel and see what he feels, including their son. However, this caused their marriage to fall apart due to Jack’s lack of privacy and Carrie’s bodily autonomy, and eventually Rolo suggests wiping Carrie’s consciousness before he decides to place Carrie’s consciousness into a monkey doll, unable to do anything but push two buttons. The doll was promptly abandoned and after Rolo was fired, kept Carrie’s consciousness in the doll and placed her in his musuem.
  • Convinced Death Row inmates Clayton Leigh before his execution to transfer his conciseness under the promise of helping his family. When he agrees and Rolo takes out his consciousness when he is executed, Rolo in truth adds Clayton to his museum, and proceeds to place him as an exhibit for guests to electrocute Clayton for ten seconds, making him go through horrific pain, and the people who electrocuted him gets a souvenir: a digital copy of Clayton’s pain and screaming.
  • When his business eventually tanked, Rolo has sadists and white supremacists pay to torture Clayton, including one man who paided extra to electrocute him for more than ten seconds, driving Clayton into a vegetative coma. This eventually caused Clayton’s wife and Nish’s own mother to overdose due to guilt.
