~ Zordon, on Rita |
Rita Repulsa is the main antagonist of the 2017 film reboot of The Power Rangers. A more ruthless villainess and a fallen heroine, Rita was a traitorous Green Ranger who betrayed her fellow Rangers to take the Zeo Crystal to gain power over life and death. Her former Rangers-in-arms, led by Zordon, fell by her hand, which ended with Rita rendered comatose and in a near-death state in ocean while Zordon had his spirit transferred to the Morphing Grid through their ship's systems.
She was portrayed by Elizabeth Banks.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
- This version of Rita is far worse than her TV Series counterpart, who is comical and standard, whereas this version is homicidal and played dead serious despite having few comedic moments like the Krispy Kreme scene, but none of those detract from her villainy.
- Also while the TV Rita has some redeeming traits (such as love for her family and later on Lord Zedd), the movie version has none and cares about nobody but herself.
- She heartlessly betrayed and murdered her old teammates, only to leave Zordon as the only survivor.
- Zordon himself refers to her as “pure evil”.
- After having to awaken, she killed a fisherman group that recovered her corpse.
- Upon reclaiming her power and youth, she began killing people for their gold. This was shown when she killed a hobo brutally for his gold tooth by ripping him apart.
- She has her putties to kill a policeman to demonstrate her capabilities, even blowing up the jewelry store that had a clerk and a couple in there, killing them in the process.
- She tracked down Trini Kwan, the new Yellow Ranger, to join her side while assaulting her.
- While she tells Trini that she was seen as an outsider by the rest of her team, it doesn't excuse her actions (and is likely not true at all, since she's just manipulating Trini).
- She draws out Jason Lee Scott, the new Red Ranger, and his team by using a hostage and then kills him after he no longer has use for her.
- She temporarily kills Billy Cranston, the new Blue Ranger, in cold blood by dropping him into the river after he no longer has use for her too.
- After rebuilding Goldar and assembling her putties, she led her army to Angel Grove to cause destruction and kill everyone in her path to search for the Zeo Crystal.
- She attempted to gain the Zeo Crystal for more power, not caring if it results in destroying the entire Earth completely.
- She almost killed the Power Rangers by shoving their Zords into the pit through Goldar.
- Instead of surrendering to the rangers after she is defeated, she refuses to accept any punishment Zordon bestows on her and attempts to attack them with no effort regardless.
- Shows no care for her Putties, only seeing them as her minions. While she seems to praise her creation, Goldar, it's less out of true care for him and more because Goldar is a competent warrior and a weapon to use to destroy the Earth.
Trivia[]
- Promotional material before the film's release stated that she was originally collecting the Zeo Crystal for Lord Zedd, hinting that he is the mastermind of the movie's events. However, in the film, she does not mention Zedd and instead desires the Crystal and the universe for herself, implying that she has either betrayed him or was planning on doing so before her freezing in space, or has no connections to him whatsoever.
- When the film was announced to be in production, it was presumed that Lord Zedd will be the film's villain. But this rumor was denied when Rita was confirmed to be the villain.
- She is one of the two Power Rangers Pure Evils to be from a movie, alongside Ivan Ooze.
- This version of Rita, being an evil Power Ranger, is one of the two Rangers to be willingly turned evil outside of the TV continuity of the franchise, the other being Lord Drakkon.
- This is the only two versions of Rita Repulsa, alongside her BOOM! Studios/IDW counterpart, to be Pure Evil.
