~ Reclusa introducing himself in front of the Mario Bros while announcing his goals of ruling Concordia in his own twisted image. |
Reclusa is the overarching antagonist of the 2024 role-playing game Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the sixth mainline installment of the Mario & Luigi series.
He is an ancient entity who was responsible for the destruction of several realities before reaching Concordia. It is here that Cozette, who, before her transformation into the skull-wire madman named Zokket, found his egg. He then uses the latter, who works to revive Reclusa using a dangerous chemical called Glohm, coupled with the Extension Corps, to further his goals.
These orchestrated goals include not only the destruction of Concordia, but also the separation of its islands and people in order to establish a condition of solitude without bonds and friendships, hence loneliness for his amusement and pleasure. After Zokket's defeat, his egg accumulates enough of the toxin to hatch himself. He is the nemesis of Connie, the student of Cozette, as well as one of the most difficult and dangerous foes that Mario and Luigi ever battled against.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He's existed long, long before any of the cast, and it's mentioned by Shun that his "egg" is not necessarily something he's born from nor is it his prison, but it’s where he goes to recharge after doing what he's putting Concordia through to other, less fortunate worlds.
- After arriving at Concordia, he corrupts Cozette, transforming her into his minion Zokket, which leads to the foundation of the Extension Corps and the destruction of the Uni-Tree, driving Concordia into isolation in the process. Under his influence, Zokket and the Extension Corps keep him dormant in their fortress, intent on fueling the egg with enough Glohm to reawaken him.
- To produce Glohm, Reclusa has Zokket facilitate the kidnapping of dozens of innocent Concordians using the terrifying birds known as Snaptors. The kidnapped Concordians, as well as at least some of their loved ones, are forced into slave labor under pain & fear of death.
- One victim is revealed to have had his entire family abducted, and is forced to do Zokket's bidding lest his family suffer.
- He has countless people across Concordia get infected by Glohm, which turns them anti-social, hateful, and violent, endangering both the Glohm victims and everyone around them.
- After Zokket's defeat and the death of his identity, Reclusa reawakens from his egg and expresses only mock gratitude, taunting Cozette for getting brainwashed, before surrounding Fortress Zokket with his Doom Blooms, converting it into his own lair.
- He captures most Concordians in flowers, trapping them in paradisal dream worlds which they are unable to leave, effectively reducing them to vegetables. When Snoutlet asks how they're supposed to survive like this, Reclusa gleefully reveals he plans for them all to slowly and obliviously starve to death in their paralysis.
- To make matters worse, he brags that he's bestowed this exact fate on countless previous worlds, indicating that he's caused the populations of entire realities to waste away.
- He then sadistically announces his intent to invade the Mushroom Kingdom next, singling it out as a "fun world".
- While most of the Concordians are trapped in the flowers, several loved ones can do nothing but look on as they're unable to get through to them. Multiple helpless children are seen sobbing as they desperately beg for their parents to wake up from their hallucinations.
- One of the captured Concordians on Merrygo Island thanks a loved one for visiting them all the way from their grave, meaning Reclusa exploited their grief and planned for them to die while believing their loved one to be back from the dead.
- He sends hordes of his own soldiers as well as Glohmed citizens of Concordia to wipe out the people outside of his flowers' control.
- On a small islet, Princess Peach, Starlow, and the IDLE crew are rounded up and nearly killed by a flock of Glohmed troops.
- Under the brainwashing effects of Glohm, the previously reformed Gorumbla goes berserk, breaks his aunt Willma's heart and promises to crush her along with her children.
- A squad of Glohmed Koopa Troopas go on a rampage on Offandon Island, attacking everyone in sight. They surround Bowser Jr. and take turns striking him, all while taunting him that he's useless, and promising that after they've beaten him to death, they'll destroy the rest of Bowser's army and kill Buddy, Bowser Jr.'s new best friend.
- As Shun reveals, not only has Reclusa already ruined numerous worlds, but he will continue to do so forever unless he's stopped.
- A running gag is that Shun most of the time gets interrupted by Ecks or Ten when he's talking, but this isn't present when he explains Reclusa's origins & methods, underlining just how much of a threat Reclusa truly is.
- When Cozette attempts to stop Reclusa in order to atone for her involuntary crimes as Zokket, Reclusa cruelly beats her within an inch of her life and leaves her to be found by the Mario Bros and Connie.
- At the Soli-Tree's Middle Floor, he ambushes the Bros with flowers, sending them into a simulation of the Mushroom Kingdom with Princess Peach bonding with Bowser to stop them from interfering with his plans. If not for Snoutlet (who resided under Luigi's cap throughout the adventure) pointing out the flaws in the simulation, he would have succeeded in keeping them there until they died.
- He deployed an army of minions to kill the Mario Bros. on the top floor. Fortunately, they were saved by Bowser and his fleet.
- After fusing with the Soli-Tree and becoming Weeping Reclusa, he strikes Bowser's airship, causing it to nearly crash and kill everyone aboard, as well as swatting Bowser away. He then summons a fog of pure Glohm to gas Mario, Luigi, Snoutlet, Connie and Cozette. They all fall unconscious, but are saved by their accrued Bond Energy.
- He also attempts to have Snoutlet be eaten by his Doom Blooms.
- Within the Weeping Core and by himself, Reclusa personally attempts to murder the Mario Bros.
- After being weakened, he feigns remorse, seemingly apologizing for his actions before destroying the battlefield floor in a final desperate act to kill Mario and Luigi.
- After his defeat, Reclusa refuses to acknowledge the power of bonds, complaining about his failure to enforce eternal solitude upon Concordia, to which Connie calls him out for his hypocrisy and tells him that he has no place in Concordia, nor in any other world, which finally caused him to cease from existence in a karmic way for all the heinous things he has done.
- While Reclusa has hammy and comedic moments, such as him speaking in a sing-along manner at times, they don't even remotely detract from his vileness, instead just emphasizing how nihilistic and monstrous he is and is taken completely seriously.
- Despite the franchise’s heinous standards, Reclusa manages to stand out with his own niche of awful actions; being an (implied) destroyer of worlds whose modus operandi involves trapping the world's population in their minds, keeping them helplessly locked inside their euphoric delusions as they slowly waste away, dwindle and die. All so that Reclusa can have the world to himself to play with until it "breaks", to which he then moves onto the next, with it being emphasized that he will do this ''again and again'' unless he's taken care of.
- He's vile enough to the point where he invokes visible rage and hatred from Mario every time he's onscreen (even including the otherwise extremely kind-hearted Connie), which is quite rare for most villains in the series.
Trivia[]
- Reclusa is the sixth villain from the Super Mario franchise to be Pure Evil and the second one coming from the Mario & Luigi Series, with the first being Princess Shroob.
