Quercus Alba (Japanese: Kāneiji Onreddo) is the main antagonist of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, as well as being one of the two overarching antagonists of its sequel Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit (alongside Di-Jun Wang's body double).
He is a crime boss and the leader of the Cohdopian Smuggling Ring that was previously a war hero that protected the royal Cohdopian family several times and served his country proudly, but gave into corruption after being given a lot of political power by the family and decided to start his smuggling ring as a way for quick money. He would abuse the diplomatic immunity he was granted to be able to escape all consequences for his acts and caused chaos and economic unrest all over the world until he was eventually defeated by Miles Edgeworth and Shi-Long Lang and exposed as both the leader and a murderer.
He was voiced by John Airhart in the English localization.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Succumbs to corruption of power and used his position to start a smuggling ring for the sake of quick cash.
- Willingly cripples Allebahst's and Zheng Fa's economy to further the goals for his smuggling ring for his own profit, causing a destabilization in both countries.
- Pretends to shift blame to himself for being an incompetent ambassador in order for people to not suspect him for any of his crimes which resulted in the problems of Codophia.
- Having people commit murder on those who prove to be a threat on the smuggling ring. These murders being:
- Manny Coachen killing Cece Yew when she tried to expose the smuggling ring plot.
- "Calisto Yew" becoming an insider of the Yatagarasu on the pretense that she was the sister of Cece Yew in order to keep tabs on their investigation. He also had "Calisto Yew" betray the Yatagarasu and kill Byrne Faraday when his actions became a threat to the smuggling ring.
- Mack Rell shooting Deid Mann to death after he was going to expose the smuggling ring plot, with Calisto killing both Faraday and Rell later on.
- Had Ernest hide the evidence of Cece Yew's murder to exonerate Manny Coachen.
- Had "Shih-na" become an insider of Interpol to keep tabs on their investigation into the smuggling ring.
- Willingly allows his allies to be put behind bars if it means his smuggling ring won't put at any risk.
- Had Cammy Meele pilfer the Alif Red statue from an art dealer from Borginia, also leading to the murder of Akbey Hicks when she murders him to prevent him from finding information about the smuggling ring.
- Had Jacques Portsman try to prevent Ernest Amano from being put behind bars in order to protect his role in the KG-8 Incident.
- He then later has Portsman attempt to steal the video tape of the KG-8 incident and the Yatagarasu card that Faraday had put into a case file years earlier, leading to Portsman also killing a man named Buddy Faith to do so.
- Willingly tries to sabotage the peaceful reunification between Allebahst and Babahl just so his smuggling ring can continue.
- Conspired with Manny Coachen to create counterfeit bills using plates stored inside the Babahlese Statue.
- Initiated a Yatagarasu media scare to frame a phantom suspect for the murder plot and lure Interpol for security detail, so "Shih-na" has an opportunity to perform her role in the murder.
- Killed Manny Coachen in revenge for his attempt at usurping the sway of affairs regarding the reunification of the country.
- Scared the spectators of the speech by creating a Yatagarasu symbol out of the statues when the spotlights came on. He did this just so he had more time to move the body.
- Made "Shih-na" commit arson in the Babahlese Embassy to lure people into draining the pool water just so he had a passageway to covertly move Manny Coachen's body away from his embassy.
- It's suggested he invited Franziska von Karma to speak with him just to frame her for the crime he's about to commit.
- Bludgeons Mask☆DeMasque II (Ka-Shi Nou) to death as revenge for agreeing with Coachen to help him usurp the sway of matter by swapping the two statues. He then uses the wound he received from Coachen and wiped his own blood on gardening sheers to claim self-defense.
- Uses his position as ambassador to invoke diplomatic immunity in order to escape justice of his crimes at any capacity.
- His most chilling characteristic is his perception of the legal system as a complex, amusing sport.
- During his final confrontation with Miles Edgeworth, he mockingly comments on his impending defeat, "It looks like I just might lose our little game, this time". This casual statement shows his disdain for the grave consequences at stake—including the lives and reputations he has ruined.
- As a powerful ambassador, he is legally "impregnable," exploiting diplomatic immunity to orchestrate an international smuggling ring with no fear of consequences. His understanding of the system is not for upholding justice, but for manipulating its loopholes for personal gain.
- His arrogant belief that he is untouchable leads him to treat the investigation with a detached amusement, only becoming concerned when Edgeworth's persistent efforts begin to dismantle his scheme.
- Beyond his calculated game-playing, he demonstrates a complete absence of empathy for the lives he destroys.
- In a critical moment, Edgeworth demands to know if he truly believes every life is "precious." His cynical, dismissive reply—"Heh heh heh...Do you really need me to answer that for you?"—confirms his coldheartedness. He views other people as expendable pawns to be used and discarded, having multiple people murdered to protect his secrets.
- Throughout the game, he maintains a persona of a kind, frail old man who apologizes for his perceived mistakes. This deception is a mask for his true, cruel, and selfish nature. The stark contrast between this innocent facade and his arrogant reality makes his lack of empathy all the more disturbing.
- While he made have saved the royal Codophian family several times, he clearly is shown to care more about using the privilege they give him as gratitude for despicable purposes.
- While he does hint at a soft side during his fourth testimony where he admits that he didn’t try to see the Pink Princess because he heard she had to rest because of hip problems and when Kay mockingly asks if he had a soft spot, he replies that since he has had back problems before, he knows how it feels, this statement is ambiguous considering that in the same testimony, he was lying about his murder and trying to paint himself in a less villainous light.
- Unlike other Ace Attorney villains who might have a personal history with the protagonists, Alba's evil is purely transactional and mercenary. The game's overarching smuggling plot has little emotional weight for him; it is simply a means to an end, showing that his malice is rooted in greed, not personal vendettas.
