Quentin Beck is the main antagonist of the What If...? episode, "What If... The Emergence Destroyed the Earth?".
He is a tyrannical version of Mysterio who usurped and took over Stark Industries after Tiamut left the Earth in ruins. Rebranding the corporation as the Iron Federation and ruling the devastated planet with an iron fist, Mysterio leads his right-hand Vision and his Legionnaires in wiping the Alliance resistance. Injecting himself with his own nanites, he was granted superhuman abilities at the risk of slowly declining his lifeline for power.
He was voiced by Alejandro Saab, who also voices Atsushi Kanamoto in Sword Art Online.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Like his Sacred Timeline counterpart, he still worked under Stark Industries until Tiamut emerged from the Earth. Using this opportunity, he usurped Tony Stark out of ownership and rebranded Stark Inudstries into the Iron Federation, a tyrannical regime that oversees subjugating whatever remained on Earth with an iron fist.
- Built an entire army of Iron Legionnaires and building his own version of Vision, scattering them across the world to act out on killing potential dissenters.
- Wiped out most of the Alliance, a resistance group, and killed over thousands of them to ensure he isn't opposed and continue his reign over Earth.
- Sent Vision to track down the remaining members of the Alliance and upon entering their base, the former brutally wiped out dozens of the remaining brigade.
- Using his illusions as a diversion, he knocks out Riri Williams unconscious and manages to hack into her neural network to instill a simulation that she was able to enter his headquarters and hack into his "network". In actuality, trapped her there while he manages to kill the last remaining members of the Alliance; Ying Nan, Wong, Okoye, and Valkyrie.
- Torturously electrocutes Riri and attempted to transfer his consciousness into her body by assimilating her, using her body as his new vessel.
- Unveils his illusions to cruelly reveal Riri the corpses of the now dead Alliance members, breaking her spirit and mocking her as he begins assimilating her. He comes close to killing her and likely continue his reign scot-free if not for Uatu the Watcher's interference, encouraging Riri to fight back.
- While his death is arguably pitiful, it is not played for sympathy for several reasons. His declining lifeline due to injecting his own nanites into his bloodstream is eventually his own undoing, intending to prolong enough power to ensure he remains victorious, demonstrating that he even prioritizes his own narcissism over his own well-being, and at best, is ultimately played for well-deserved karma for all the cruel things he's done, especially since he finally loses all power over the Earth and is last seen witnessing the very ensemble, the Avengers logo, that is associated with Tony Stark.
- He is arguably much worse than his original counterpart by the sheer quantity of his crimes, as he rules the already damaged Earth in a dystopian-state and has the most personal cruelty against Riri Williams.
- While it is mentioned by Uatu that he's relived countless variances where this Mysterio won, meaning he has other counterparts who won and might've done worse afterwards. There is no further background on what happened after they've won, thus he's the only variant outside the Sacred Timeline Mysterio to stand out as the absolute worst version of the latter.
- Unlike his counterpart, he has no comedic moments and lacks the death threats against his original crew, whereas he is taken seriously and merely sees his entire federation as expendable pawns.
Trivia[]
- This is the only Pure Evil version of Mysterio to not be named after his supervillain persona.
