The Queen of Hearts is the main antagonist of Disney's 1951 13th full-length feature animated film Alice in Wonderland, based off of Lewis Carroll's novel with the same name. She is the mad and hot-tempered ruler of Wonderland who has a tendency to order residents beheaded over the most petty reasons whenever she loses her temper and is feared all around for this.
She was voiced by the late Verna Felton.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
- It's established that having residents be beheaded for the most trivial reasons is quite routine for her and something she has regularly done long beforehand with her having built a whole reputation around Wonderland where every resident fears her for her temper and those habits and knowing what will happen to those who cross her and the three card gardeners knowing what will happen to them simply for planting white roses instead of the red ones she liked.
- It's also conveyed that the Queen enjoys losing her temper with her smiling whenever she is about to and excitedly telling the White Rabbit to get to the part where she loses her temper as he reads Alice's "charges" since that's her favourite part, confirming that she's mainly beheading people for sadism and her losing her temper is simply a pretext.
- Upon discovering that her three card gardeners have planted white roses and painted them red, she simply smiles before angrily shouting at gardners and sadistically scaring them into blaming each other, only for her to still order to behead them.
- She hosts a game of croquet that consists of animal cruelty where flamingoes are forced to be mallets and hedgehogs as balls against their will.
- When one of the cards fails to help her score a single shot, she orders him beheaded.
- After the Cheshire Cat causes the queen to flip herself over into the ground, she assumes it's Alice's fault and instantly begins ordering her beheaded, only stopping because her husband, the King of Hearts, manages to convince her to give her a trial.
- Her trial for Alice is instantly proven to be a sham as she had the sentence to behead her be before the verdict. She only pauses because the King gets her to begrudgingly summon witnesses to the stand instead.
- After the Cheshire Cat tricks Alice into trying to get the queen to see him and disappear and causes mayhem where the Mad Hatter and March Hare chase after the panicking Dormouse and cause the tapestry to fall onto her and throw jam into her face before the King accidentally hits her on the head with a hammer, the Queen furiously declares that someone's head will roll for this and decides to have it be Alice upon getting the tapestry off only for Alice to grow into a giant.
- When Alice shrinks back to her normal size and the Cheshire Cat repeats her insult towards her, the Queen angrily orders her beheaded once more and leads a whole manhunt after her all across Wonderland to do so though Alice manages to wake up and escape her and the residents in the nick of time.
- While she appeared to care for the King of Hearts at first as she held Alice's trial on his behalf and patted him on the head for pleading gently, she subverts this by using him as a human shield when Alice turns into a giant and she senses danger.
- Furthermore, she still acts abusive towards him and when the King of Hearts accidentally hits her on the head with a hammer, he instantly passes it on to someone else, indicating that even he isn't safe from her wrath.
- While the Walrus does worse as he ate 12 baby oysters, he is a fictional-fictional character who only appears in a story told by Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum with nothing establishing that he actually exists in Wonderland. It could be argued that the Queen could stand out for how routine her habits of beheading people are as well.
Trivia[]
- She and the Walrus are Disney's chronologically first Silly Pure Evils from a full-length feature animated film and she is the only one to be female.
- She is one of the two versions of Queen of Hearts to be Pure Evil along with Grim Heart.
