Queen Beryl is the main antagonist in the first season of the 1992 anime Sailor Moon, based on the manga series of the same name.
As with her original counterpart she is the Queen of the Dark Kingdom and a servant to the entity known as Queen Metalia and Sailor Moon's arch-nemesis, however she is notably far more malicious and outwardly cruel than her original self.
She is voiced by Keiko Han in the original Japanese dub.
In the DiC English dub she is voiced by Naz Edwards.
In the Viz Dub she is voiced by Cindy Robinson who also voiced her original self in Sailor Moon Crystal, Slan in the Berserk Golden Age Arc movie and the female voice of The End in Sonic Frontiers.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
- Along with Queen Metalia, she’s responsible for the destruction of the Moon Kingdom in the past. Which resulted in Queen Serenity’s death.
- Subjected Jadeite to a fate worse than death for repeatedly failing his mission to kill the Sailor Guardians even though Jadeite was one of her most loyal followers, completely disregarding the fact that he had information about the Sailor Guardians' identities.
- Enlisted her youma (monsters) to kill Nephrite as he fell in love with Naru/Molly. Not only she killed Nephrite in doing so, but also could have likely have Naru/Molly be killed as well.
- Killed Zoisite for his disobedience in spite of his lover Kunzite being present and begging her to spare him.
- Adding insult to injury, Beryl coldly ordered Kunzite to "dispose of that trash" after the fact.
- Unlike her manga counterpart, Beryl's interest in Endymion is simply pure warped lust wrapped in unhealthy obsession, rather than any genuine feelings of love for him as an individual. She even tries to kill him when he resists her creepy advances.
- Kidnapped Tuxedo Mask/Prince Endymion and brainwashed him due to her perverted obsession.
- Sent out monsters to steal energy away from humans, including children as well as turning some humans into monsters though this ended up in failure when Sailor Moon came in to save them.
- Sent the DD Girls to brutally kill all of the Sailor Guardians with the exception of Sailor Moon herself.
- Forcing Sailor Moon to fight Endymion, the man she loves out of sheer sadism.
- As a final resort, Metallia merges with Beryl and together in their new, terrifying form they try to kill Sailor Moon before finally being killed.
Trivia[]
- Like with other Sailor Moon villains such as Professor Souichi Tomoe Beryl's character changes throughout adaptations, meaning that only her 90s anime incarnation can count as Pure Evil since the original and Crystal versions of her are much more sympathetic and have genuine redeeming qualities with a true interest in Endymion as opposed to lust.
