This Pure Evil was Headlined on July 2024.

Reverse-Flash: Someone pushed you down the stairs in school. But when you looked back--no one was there. Do you remember the electrical fire that burned down your first house in Fallville? Or the day you moved to Central City and left the back door open? Your dog ran out and got hit by a car. What if every bad thing that happened to you was orchestrated by one person? By an enemy you hadn't even made yet? I pushed you down the stairs. I opened the door, Barry. I started the fire
The Flash: You... You did it, didn't you? You son of a bitch.
Reverse-Flash: Yes. I murdered your mother, Barry.
~ Reverse-Flash admitting to being behind nearly every bad thing that happened in the Flash's life, including the murder of his mother, just to spite him.
You hurt me. Like you hurt everyone, Flash. And I'm going to keep taking people from you until you learn to make time for the people who matter in your life. Maybe then you'd finally see who your real friends are.
~ Reverse-Flash to Flash.

Professor Eobard Thawne, also known as Professor Zoom and the Reverse-Flash, is one of the main antagonists of the DC Universe and the arch-nemesis of Barry Allen, the second iteration of the Flash. He is one of the two main antagonists of the Flash franchise, alongside Gorilla Grodd.

He is a scientist from the 25th century who created the Negative Speed Force in order to replicate the power of the Flash, the speedster hero he idolized. However, after discovering he was destined to become the Flash's greatest archenemy, he was driven insane by jealousy and hatred and decided to dedicate his whole existence to destroying the entire life of the Flash, real name Barry Allen.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Although the Pre-Flashpoint version of Thawne’s origins are genuinely tragic (His birth was all part of a protocol rather than out of being desired, being berated and neglected by his parents mostly in favor of his younger brother in his childhood, being raised to live up to the expectations of the shallow, superficial, strict and regimented society he lived in during his era, wasting years of research on unlocking the secrets of the Speed Force, and finally going mad upon discovering that he was destined to be mortal enemies with the Flash rather than his best friend and then resulting in being imprisoned by him to suffer which caused him to become vengeful towards the Flash), he is still far past it since his descent into madness fueled his arrogant, callous, sadistic and unstable nature that enacts his crimes which are so heinous and despicable that they nullify any tragedy and misfortune he went through.
  • He has done untold damage to the timeline by changing key events in his life.
    • When his brother Robern tried to confiscate Eobard's illegal research on the speed force and arrest him, his future self restrained his brother and prevented him from ever being born, thus killing him and leaving the present day Eobard to grow up as an only child and focus more on his research on the Speed Force. While Eobard and Robern did have an abysmal brotherly relationship, as Robern was a terrible and obnoxious brother and a spoiled child, he did not deserve to die.
    • Secondly, his future self killed Professor Drake, the professor of the Flash Museum, when he refused to collaborate with Eobard to prove the existence of the Speed Force; thus, the present-day, Eobard gained position as the professor of the Flash Museum.
    • Thirdly, his future self manipulated the timeline to cause his parents to die in an accident (also killing them) to prevent them from intervening with his work as well, thus leaving the present-day Eobard as an orphan.
    • And fourthly, he killed the fiancé of a woman he fell in love with (although he might've had genuine feelings; this also could've been simply a perverted obsession) and every man who she had ever dated just to have her. And when she rejected his romantic advances, he traveled back in time to when she was 5 years old and lobotomized her, leaving her as an institutionalized mute for the rest of her life.
    • All of these heinous acts and orchestrated tragedies done by Eobard's future self were to pragmatically eliminate loose ends to allow himself in the present day to create his own origin story; however, none of them ever fazed the present day Eobard and kept doing his research on the speed force, thus demonstrating how obsessed he is with the speed force and becoming the Flash that he has lost his sanity and is callous towards those who get in his way.
  • He has committed horrible and very petty acts against Barry Allen's life and his loved ones since he was a child, such as:
    • Pushing him down the stairs, killing his dog, burning his house down, and also being the monster that is under his bed.
    • Erasing his best friend from existence repeatedly and continually taunting and tormenting him for his own sadistic amusement after being rejected by him and sent to jail to suffer.
  • Most infamously, he murdered Barry’s mother, Nora Allen, and incriminated his father, Henry, for it to ruin his life.
  • He killed Iris West by vibrating his hand through her head. He also tried to kill Fiona Webb in the same manner, forcing Barry to snap his neck.
  • During The Return of Barry Allen, he convinced himself that he was Barry Allen and travelled back in time to steal the latter's identity. After learning the people of Central City had accepted Wally West as the new Flash, Thawne opted to try and destroy the city out of revenge for forgetting "him."
  • In Flash: Rebirth, he killed Johnny Quick and tried to murder Wally's children in front of their mother.
  • In Flashpoint, while he wasn't directly responsible for the world's destruction, he refused to let Barry rewind time and fix it out of sheer sadism and spite, even if it meant that he would die too.
  • During the crossover event, The Button, Thawne ripped up a letter from Thomas Wayne to Bruce right in front of him out of spite.
  • He threatened to travel back in time and adopt Barry as a child to raise him as his acolyte.
  • Revealed Barry's identity to Iris out of sheer spite.
  • He lied to Barry, claiming that if he came with him, he'd take Iris back to the 21st century, only to end up trapping Barry in the negative speed force.
  • He murdered Godspeed's brother before killing Godspeed.
  • He gave the Clown the gun used to cripple Hunter Zolomon, thus turning him into Zoom.
  • During a trial for Deathstroke held by a sector of the Secret Society of Supervillains, when the Riddler explained the philosophy of evil in Slade's defense and pretty much called out himself and every other member within the room for being just as evil, Thawne tried justifying himself by twisting the moral philosophy ethics of Kant for himself while also saying that he isn't evil, just "efficient."
