“ | You're the spitting image of her now. I regret it to this day. If she had only trusted me instead of trying to run, it could have played out quite different. What a terrible tragedy, to lose the last of the pure-blooded Ancients... though not completely. Would you like to see your mother? Albeit through the lens of my microscopes. Did you really think we'd leave such a precious specimen to rot in the gutter? We collected a catalogue of every last bit of her. Hair, skin, organs, every fragment of every bone... As breathtaking as death as in life! As you, my dear! Ifalna was elegance, right down to her cellular structure. (laughs) And there it is. That same elegance. | „ |
~ Hojo attempting to break Aerith's spirit. |
Professor Hojo is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Jenova) of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, a subseries of the Final Fantasy franchise.
Hojo serves as the head of Shinra's Science Research Division, playing an influential role in the corporation via masterminding SOLDIER and the Jenova Project. However, Hojo's goals and motivations differ from the corporation he answers for, prioritising studying Jenova as well as monitoring the actions of his biological son and greatest creation, Sephiroth. Hojo's involvement with SOLDIER and Jenova, alongside the countless acts of cruelty performed in his unethical experiments, make him directly or indirectly connected to most of the major antagonists of the Compilation.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
Original continuity[]
- He is the one responsible for Sephiroth’s creation when he submitted his own child for Professor Gast’s Jenova project by injecting him with Jenova cells while in the womb. What’s worse is he immediately shipped him off to be raised in a Shinra lab and denied Lucrecia to ever hold or see her son.
- Unlike Sephiroth, he does not have any excuse for his actions and does not have any subverted positive factors as he was always sadistic and murderous.
- When Vincent Valentine objected to Hojo wanting to use Lucrecia's unborn child for his experiments, Hojo remorselessly shot him as well as performed despicable experiments on him, turning him into a monster before sealing him in Nibelheim.
- When Lucrecia attempted to save Vincent, he attempted to gaslight her into believing that she was simply conducting another experiment, while mocking Vincent for being able to serve his beloved even in death.
- He raised his son to be a child soldier for Shinra, physically abusing him throughout his childhood while stating that his pain would make him stronger. He also gave him false information about his mother, claiming that she died at childbirth and that her name was Jenova, all of this making him partially responsible for Sephiroth’s descent in madness.
- When Professor Gast let Ifalna escape and they fell in love and had a child, Hojo murdered Gast and kidnapped the mother and daughter to use for his experiments. While they later escaped Ifalna died in the slums which is partially Hojo's fault as well.
- He subjected Red XIII to terrible experiments, to the point of mutilating his body.
- He used Mako and Jenova Cells to experiment on many innocents animals and people, turning them into monsters.
- He experiments on the survivors of the Nibelheim, turning them into Sephiroth Clones. These are beings enslaved by Sephiroth’s will, with the only initial exceptions being Cloud and Zack. Cloud later suffers under the influence of Sephiroth due to Hojo's actions.
- In The Remake he attempts to psychologically torment Aerith by talking about how he dissected her mom's corpse with glee and how still has pieces of her she can see. He also attempted to torture her with a psychoactive drug as well.
- He attempted to force Aerith and Red XIII to breed in a twisted attempt to continue their bloodlines
- When Cloud begs Hojo to give him a number like the rest of the clones Hojo just mocks him as a failed experiment even though he was the only successful clone, though Cloud later regains himself with Tifa’s help.
- He attempted to fire the Sister Ray at the Northern Crater to give Sephiroth more energy and asset him in his omnicidal goals, not caring that this would destroy Midgar, thus betraying Shinra who is opposing Sephiroth.
- Using the digital version of himself he possessed Weiss' body and took over Deepground and told them to kill scores of innocents to summon Omega so he could fuse with it and destroy the planet before moving on to the stars.
- His death in the original game and the destruction of his digital version were not played for sympathy, as he deserved it for the crimes he committed.
Remake continuity[]
- His body count is expanded with a vastly increased number of victims in his underground lab.
- His role in Ifalna's death is much more direct deciding after Aerith showed signs of being an ancient that he did not need to be gentle with Ifalna, causing him to push her to the brink with his experiments causing her to failing health and death.
- He run an underground battle simulator under Nibelheim's "Shinra Mansion", which he used to slaughter countless test subjects just to acquire data.
- He kidnapped 7 children and enslaved their minds turning them into cyborgs, including Chadley. He also attempted to experiment on Chadley's real body to hack into him.
- Any survivors are then forced to take part in mating experiments to create more SOLDIERS.
- The amount of Sephiroth clones is increased by the hundreds with the effects on their mind turning them into little more than zombies. Through Broden and Roche's cases we can see the slow descent into becoming a Sephiroth clone, marked by sickness and hearing voices before losing one's mind entirely.
- What's worse is the reveal that all SOLDIERS are destined to degrade and become Sephiroth Clones making Hojo as the head of it responsible for their fates.
- The torture of Red XIII is more thoroughly explored with prolonged showings of Hojo burning the number XIII (13) into his flesh and the effect it had on him, resulting in PTSD and an impaired sense of smell.
- He attempts to psychologically torment Aerith by talking about how he dissected her mom's corpse with glee and how still has pieces of her she can see. He also attempted to torture her with a psychoactive drug as well.
- He attempts to have Aerith raped by multiple SOLDIER types just to see what would happen with a crossbreed, which disgusted most of the other Shinra Board Members.
- Despite being the only one to believe Palmer that Sephiroth was in the building he did nothing to stop him and allowed him to steal JENOVA's body just to see what would happen.
- When the Shinra ship captain attempts to ask for his help dealing with the mutation of the Sephiroth clones Hojo offers him no help and just tells him to mark his body before he dies so he can experiment on him.
- Upon arriving in Cost del Sol he unleashed monsters upon the beach and had them fuse with the Sephiroth clones just so he could have samples, endangering the people on the beach.
- He attempted to capture Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, and Red XIII for use in his labs with him stating his plans to force Tifa to bear children that could be the next great hero.
- He showed a desire to kill and dissect a WEAPON, a sentient being that exists to protect the planet.
- He injected Roche with Jenova cells, speeding up his degradation and causing him to become a Sephiroth clone,
- While Roche did volunteer he was unware that he would suffer a fate worse then death.
- He suggested turning the wounded Tseng into Sephiroth clone only being stopped by Rufus.
Trivia[]
- Professor Hojo is the only Final Fantasy VII Pure Evil villain who is purely evil in both versions, as Shinra and Don Corneo are only Pure Evil in the remake.
