Professor Chang is a supporting antagonist in the 2003 Teen Titans animated series. He is a Chinese mad scientist who creates weapons and carries out experiments for supervillains and terrorists in exchange for money. After being coerced into helping Robin, Chang decides to become a supervillain himself.
He was voiced by James Hong, who also voiced Mandarin in Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Prior to the events of the series, he was part of a project in the Soviet Union, which experimented on soldiers to give them superpowers. One such subject was transformed into Red Star, whose powers grew unstable, causing energy to build up within him and detonate whenever he gets stressed.
- One explosion wiped out both the laboratory and a nearby town, killing dozens, if not hundreds in the process, while Chang and his cohorts merely fled the scene, showing no remorse.
- He sells weapons to terrorists and supervillains for profit.
- He orders his henchmen to steal zynothium in order to power a massive laser that will wipe out the city. His motivation for destroying the city was simply that he was bored of selling to supervillains and thought it would be fun to become one.
- He kidnaps Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire and Raven, threatening to kill them if Robin interferes. In reality, he plans on killing them anyway.
- When Robin and Red X arrive and stop him from destroying the city by mere seconds, he orders his henchmen to kill them while blasting them with his laser.
- He turns the laser on the captive Titans and attempts to disintegrate them just to spite Robin.
- After breaking out of prison and being freed from Brother Blood's control, Chang joins the Brotherhood of Evil and allows them to use his flash-freezer, working with the Brain to freeze all the Titans and keep them as trophies.
- While villains like Slade, Trigon and the Brain have technically done worse, Chang still stands out due to still being heinous despite his lower resources and lesser screentime.
Trivia[]
- From all the Pure Evil villains of Teen Titans, Professor Chang is the only one to not be the primary villain of a season, as Slade was the main antagonist of the first two seasons, Trigon was the main antagonist of the fourth season and the Brain was the main antagonist of the fifth season.
