You are foolish, all of you... even my own son!
~ Pride as he strangles Selim to death; his infamous quote.

Pride (プライド Puraido?) is a major antagonist in the 2003 anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist.

He is the true identity of Führer King Bradley. Created by Dante, he has reached the top of the State Military in order to pull the strings of society to create a Philosopher's Stone for her. He's the arch-enemy of Roy Mustang.

He was voiced by Hidekatsu Shibata in the Japanese version of the anime and the late Ed Blaylock in the English version.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He's responsible for starting countless wars against neighboring lands in the hopes that one of the citizens would be driven to desperation and create a Philosopher's Stone, which would be stolen and used by his creator, Dante.
  • Masterminds the Ishvalan War, igniting the conflict by lying that a soldier shot an Ishvalan child, and then ends the conflict by sending in State Alchemists, resulting in the near-extermination of the Ishvalan race.
  • Ordered the military's operations in Reole, which resulted in mass death and devastation that spanned for more than a year, all in order to sow more conflict and create a Philosopher's Stone.
  • After Martel discovered his identity as a Homunculus, he killed her by stabbing her while she was hidden inside Alphonse's armor in an attempt to hide his secret.
  • When Roy confronts Pride over his actions and deception, Pride justifies himself by saying his actions as Fuhrer have only made Amestris prosper and expanded their territory, then claims that he's stopping the human race from leading itself to ruin by taking the Philosopher's Stone before any humans can use it, showing no remorse for any of his actions and his massive delusions.
  • During his fight with Roy, he sadistically toys with him instead of simply killing him, continuously mocking him while slowly and painfully stabbing him, arrogantly proclaiming himself to be one of God's guardian angels.
  • When his son, Selim, arrives with the skull of his former body, his only weakness, Pride goes berserk and strangles Selim to death despite his pleas, throwing him aside like a piece of garbage and proclaiming all humans to be foolish, including his own son.
  • Though he does appear to show some loyalty towards Dante and possibly his fellow homunculus, this is never directly shown, and it's more likely he's using them for his own ends to maintain his power as the Fuhrer of Amestris. His lack of care can be supported when he mocks Envy over his issues with Hohenheim.
  • Unlike the other homunculi such as Lust, Pride holds no interest in becoming a human, as he holds contempt for humanity as a whole.
  • Unlike his manga and Brotherhood counterpart, Pride completely lacks any redeeming qualities, such as his respect for humans and his love for his wife, instead considering humans to be foolish and beneath him; while he was never shown interacting with his wife, given that he killed Selim, it's very likely he had no love for her either.

Trivia[]

  • Pride is one of the many Pure Evil characters of the 2003 anime to be much more horrid than their manga and Brotherhood counterparts, the others being Solf J. Kimblee and Barry the Chopper.
