~ Porky revealing his motives in Mother 3 |
Porky Minch (also known as "Pokey" due in part to a translation error) is one of the two main antagonist (alongside Giygas) of the Mother video game series, serving as the secondary antagonist of EarthBound/Mother 2 and the main antagonist of Mother 3.
He made his debut in EarthBound, which displays him as the cowardly, yet, incredibly obnoxious next-door neighbor to Ness, the protagonist of the story, who he later confronts from time to time throughout the whole game, constantly being a thorn on his side. As the story progresses, so does Porky in power, extending from a high priest of Mr. Carpainter's Happy Happist cult, to Monotoli's adviser, then to become Giygas' right-hand man, and quite possibly even be the more superior during the final boss battle.
In Mother 3, he attains nigh-immortality and traveled throughout time for many millenniums, until he becomes the nefarious king of the vast Pigmask Army and the Nowhere Islands. He begins his influence by turning the once-happy town of Tazmily Village into a capitalist regime serving him. He also plots to destroy the world out of boredom and is stopped by Lucas.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- While he has multiple comedic moments, none of them are detracting and he's still taken completely seriously in-universe, especially after the time skip where he significantly darkens the mood with his horrific actions. Additionally, some of these comedic moments just serve to show how sadistic, malicious and vile he actually is.
- While he suffered a difficult childhood due to abuse from his parents and loneliness from bullying due to his weight, his tragedy does not hold up for multiple reasons:
- His brother, Picky, went through the same abuse he did and still held onto his morals.
- The extent of the abuse he suffered is never given much detail other than his parents giving him spankings.
- He doesn't show much signs of being affected by his abuse, even outright admitting he commits heinous acts like wanting to destroy the universe out of sheer boredom.
- Even if he were affected by his upbringing, it's FAR too weak of an excuse to make him sympathetic as his horrific crimes of harming countless innocent people unrelated to any tragedy he may have experienced, which scales countless times worse than any abuse he may have suffered.
- If anything, the sympathy goes to Shigesato Itoi, the franchise's creator, who feels bad for Porky as he thinks Porky's beginning led to his downfall, while in reality, Porky led himself to his downfall, as he still made extremely heinous actions to be played for sympathy.
- Even if he were affected by his upbringing, it's FAR too weak of an excuse to make him sympathetic as his horrific crimes of harming countless innocent people unrelated to any tragedy he may have experienced, which scales countless times worse than any abuse he may have suffered.
- While he seemingly may have had some care for his family, as he kept robotic clones of his mother in a café, there is no real indication he genuinely loved his family. This is also mitigated by the fact that he made the choice to abandon them completely and could have returned whenever he wanted too. There are also hints that he was a bully to Picky.
- While Ness was his only friend growing up, his relationship with him could be described as envious and needy at best and would even threaten to hurt him for no reason and later try feeding him to Giygas. He has most likely long since severed any ties with him and only keeps his yo-yo and records movies of his adventures due to obsession.
- While there are hints that he might wish for human connection, whether it be in the form of friends, family, or subjects, it's made clear that he won't let any relationship last because no one will ever meet his impossible standards.
EarthBound/Mother 2[]
- Despite it being his fault for leaving his brother at the meteor, he knocks on Ness' family's door late at night to have Ness find his brother, saying that if he refuses then he will say something that will cut him like a knife.
- He leads an entire brainwashed cult and has them kidnap Paula Jones to use as a human sacrifice while trying to presumably kill Ness for stopping him.
- He becomes a business consultant for Fourside mayor Geldegarde Monotoli alongside his father, profiting off the corruption of the city.
- He leaves a note in Summers to taunt Ness, saying he can eat his shorts.
- He teams up with Giygas in order to destroy the world and kill Ness and his friends. He even releases him from his Devil's Machine, which was containing most of his power and made him go completely insane (or more so than he already was).
- He might've usurped and manipulated Giygas based on his dialogue in the final battle, though this is not confirmed.
- He taunts Ness about being unable to stop him escaping and leaves a note. He also taunts Giygas as he calls him an "almighty idiot" for having almost no personality.
Mother 3[]
- He founded and commanded the Pigmask Army to take over the entirety of the Nowhere Islands while he also kidnapped several scientists throughout time (such as Dr. Andonuts) and forced them to do his bidding.
- He turned several animals into horrific mechanized chimera hybrids, forcing them to do his bidding.
- Due to his experiments with the animals and disturbing the Dragos, he causes the death of Lucas and Claus's mother, Hinawa, and taunted Lucas about it.
- He forces most citizens of Tazmily to work in the underground Factory alongside the Claymen in order to find more clay to produce more Claymen (this is also likely part of his quest to find the Dark Dragon's body.) These working conditions were exceptionally cruel as superior Claymen would supervise the humans and other lower-ranked Claymen. Claymen would also be electrocuted if they were exhausted due to the poor working conditions. For unknown reasons, he would also force animals to run on treadmills exhaustively.
- He brainwashed countless people by having Fassad sell them Happy Boxes in order to force them to submit to him. He would also trick the citizens to join his Pigmask Army, forcing others to relocate to a city tyrannically ruled by him known as New Pork City, making the city only served to please his needs while keeping actual necessities like healthy foods, livable housings and anything he doesn’t find fun out of his town.
- He kidnapped Claus, brainwashed and possibly tortured him into becoming his mindless soldier to use for his own personal goals and turned him against his own brother and father. Due to this, he would cause Claus to commit suicide after regaining his awareness.
- He planned to use Claus, now known as the Masked Man, to pull the Seven Needles in his name in order to not only kill the Magypsies, but also awaken the Dark Dragon so he can destroy the world, leaving only Porky left since he became immortal due to his time travel. While he does state that even he finds that fact incredibly sad, he laughs it off and states that he would've been completely bored had he not done that.
- Although he will be trapped inside the Absolutely Safe Capsule, as well as being alive for all eternity, which is a fate much worse than death, it is not played for sympathy as he completely deserved it for trying to destroy the world as well as teaming with Giygas in the past, all for no reason other than amusement.
Trivia[]
- During an interview, the game creator, Shigesato Itoi, denied accusations of Porky being like "a demon", instead replying that "people aren't inherently evil at heart." He intends for Porky to be a tragic and sympathetic character, mentioning his parents were horribly abusive to him while also having zero friends to play with other than Ness, which likely played a part in shaping his personality. He also believes being trapped in the Absolutely Safe Capsule makes him a Scapegoat as it is a fate too horrific for even him (with even Dr. Andonuts suggesting this in the game), saying that, "Porky will still be alive. ...But the grief of that is incredibly depressing to me. It's amazing... Porky is truly a poem in himself."
- In the official novelization, Porky is considered Inconsistently Heinous as he is presented as a genuinely tragic and sympathetic kid who is the way he is due to parental neglect and abuse from bullies, then turned evil after being parasitically infected by Giygas. During his fight with Ness, he would free him from Giygas's control and redeem himself. However this contradicts Porky's actions in the official games.
