Pale Bayleaf is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Black Narcissus) of the third and final season of Sonic X.
He is a Metarex commander who serves as Dark Oak's second-in-command. The most tactical and cruel of Oak's Metarex inner circle, Bayleaf quickly becomes an enemy of Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends, being unintimidated by them.
He was voiced by Jūrōta Kosugi in the Japanese version and by Jim Napolitano in the English version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He leads the Metarex fleet to attack the planet Cascade.
- He bribes Leon, an associate of Molly (the resistance leader of Cascade), to turn Doctor Eggman over him, leading Leon to plant a bomb in Cascade's mines to kill Molly so she would not interfere.
- He kills Molly by vaporizing her with his ship's lasers.
- Though this is censored in the 4kids dub, Pale Bayleaf still attempts to murder her.
- He destroys his own fleet of Metarex ships as a Plan B. Eggman and Bokkun were even shocked by this.
- He expresses indifference when Red Pine gets killed while defending the Metarex base from Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog. He then mocks Yellow Zelkova after he dies fighting Knuckles on a volcanic planet. These two instances prove that he doesn't care at all for his fellow commanders, unlike Dark Oak and Black Narcissus, who at least vowed to avenge Pine and Zelkova.
- He imprisons Eggman, Decoe and Bocoe after he discovers the former trying to steal the Metarex's technology.
- He tricks Leon and the Cascadean resistance fighters into fusing themselves with Metarex trees under the guise that the Cascadeans can join the Metarex by doing this, only to reveal that the trees instead slowly parasatized them of their energy, agonizingly killing them and exterminating the Cascadean race in the process.
- In the 4Kids dub, Leon reveals that Pale Bayleaf told him that he lied and never planned to actually let the Cascadeans join Metarex regardless of their success.
- He merges with Dark Oak and Black Narcissus to form the Final Mova in one last attempt to wipe out all non-plant life in the universe. This causes Cosmo to sacrifice her life to save everyone by having Tails shoot her with the Sonic Power Cannon to destroy Dark Oak.
- Unlike Dark Oak, he isn't shown repenting for his crimes in the afterlife and his death is played for satisfaction, as he tried to destroy all living things that weren't plants, and it's most likely that he would've killed all plant life anyway since he is not as caring or honorable as his comrades.
- Unlike Dark Oak and the rest of the Metarex, who are either tragic, honorable or caring of each other at some degree, Pale Bayleaf has no positive qualities to speak whatsoever and stands out due to being the villain with the highest kill count in the show.
Trivia[]
- 4Kids Entertainment had the English version of Sonic X censor and alter the scene in which Pale Bayleaf kills Molly with his ship's lasers, giving the impression that Molly instead escaped from Bayleaf's attack just like Shadow the Hedgehog asked her to do, as the scenes of her memorial at the end of the episode and in the series finale were likewise edited out. That being said, he still kills Leon and the resistance, with Leon revealing that Pale Bayleaf lied and was never going to let them join the Metarex.
