“ | I should bring your sister up here to beat you! | „ |
~ Ozai to Zuko |
“ | Our forces in the Northern Water Tribe have failed to take the city. General Zhao was killed in battle and my brother has become a traitor. My son's proven himself a failure. Now, Sozin's Comet is returning in three years. It will give all firebenders the ability of the highest firebenders, the ability to use their own Chi to create fire. That is the day we will win this war and prove the Fire Nation's dominance. Now you must stop the Avatar from mastering earth and fire. You must give us the time to get to that day. Do you accept this unspeakably important task I'm putting in your hands? | „ |
~ Ozai's ultimate plan |
Ozai is the overarching antagonist of the 2010 action-adventure fantasy film The Last Airbender, based on Book 1: Air of the 2005-2008 series Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as of its prequel graphic novel Zuko's Story.
He is the megalomaniacal Fire Lord ruling over the Fire Nation empire that is seeking to conquer the world, as well as the father of Zuko and Azula.
He was portrayed by Cliff Curtis.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Just like his animated series counterpart, he is a ruthless tyrant who increased the Fire Nation's cruelty to the world in the hundred year war, establishing many slave camps within the Earth Kingdom and being responsible for acts of countless war crimes and genocide.
- He is also shown to be more evil than his counterpart as he starved multiple villages by having his forces hoard food and medicines while forcing citizens to be soldiers against their will for him to sacrifice as mere cannon fodder.
- He attempted to sacrifice an entire batch of newly recruited soldiers for his own gain, an act that his son questioned, leading Ozai to challenge Zuko to an Agni Kai and burn his face with a permanent scar, damaging his psyche as a result, something even his own soldiers find a bit too harsh.
- He stripped Zuko of his birthright and exiled him when he refused to fight, casting him to the streets to fend for himself and only return if he finds the Avatar, before only giving him a ship with men on Zuko's request through Azula as a means to get rid of his brother Iroh.
- He backed up Zhao's genocidal invasion of the Northern Water Tribe, offering him resources and advice in order to ensure its success.
- He came up with the idea of killing the Moon Spirit despite knowing it would have a negative affect on the world.
- Upon realizing the Avatar is alive, Ozai played on Zhao and Zuko's rivalry to try finally molding Zuko into the ruthless heir he wanted to be, which was why he ordered Zuko to be left alone when Zhao believes he is a traitor, before dismissing him as a mere failure by the end of the film for failing to capture the Avatar during the Northern Water Tribe invasion.
- There's no indication that he genuinely cares for Azula other than as his heir and tool.
- Because the film does not have sequels as originally planned, he never suffers any punishment for his crimes and it's unknown if Aang and Team Avatar ever defeats him or not.
Trivia[]
- While both he and his animated counterpart are Pure Evil, this Ozai proves to be even more vile than his original version, as the original Ozai's rule over the Fire Nation was mostly through the propaganda of his ancestors beginning with Sozin rather than downright cruelty and he did allow Zuko to have a ship and crew right away as opposed to this version only doing so to get rid of Iroh.
