That's right. Once you're Tranquil, you'll do anything I ask.
~ Alrik threatening a Circle Mage.

Otto Alrik is a minor antagonist from the video game, Dragon Age II, serving as the main antagonist of one of Anders' loyalty quests in the game. He is a Templar-Lieutenant in Kirkwall.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He was responsible for imposing the Tranquil Solution, a sinister plot that would turn all mages Tranquil, meaning they'd be stripped of their magical ability. A side effect, however, is that it also strips them of their emotions and personality, making them cold, unfeeling, and obedient.
    • While the Tranquil still possess free will and can be creative, they lack inspiration or motivation and rarely see the need for improvement. They are also far more compliant with authority and would only object or disobey if it was logical. They also have no friendships or love for anybody, and only care for loyalty and obedience.
    • Alrik's plan extended even to Mages who passed their Harrowing, which was against Chantry Law.
    • After forcing Tranquility, Alrik would take advantage of their compliant nature by raping them, knowing that they would fail to see the wrongness of Alrik's forcefulness.
  • Alrik's anti-mage views are fanatical, even by the Order's standards. While most Templars are zealous, the majority don't enjoy having to kill or impose tranquility on mages, believing that it's a necessity to protect both the mages and the innocent. Even most fanatical templars genuinely believe they are acting for a good cause. Alrik, however, doesn't act out of devotion to the Maker, or for protecting anyone. Instead, he just abuses his position by stripping mages of their emotions and sexually violating them as he pleases.
  • When Alrik proposed his plan to Divine Justinia and Knight-Commander Meredith, the latter of whom is infamous for her extreme zealotry against mages, both rejected his plan. Despite this, he still carried out his plan, showing that he had no regard for authority or Chantry Law.
  • Despite his one-shot appearance, his crimes can still be seen both before and after his personal quest:
    • One of his victims was Karl Thekla, a friend and former lover of Anders, who, when briefly cured of Tranquility, was overwhelmed by emotion and begged Anders to end his life.
    • Another example can be seen where a woman named Helena coldly dismisses her former lover, Jaken, stating that only Alrik can command her. This means that he had indeed raped her in her compliant nature.
    • Other Tranquil Mages are seen claiming that Alrik "saved them" from their sins. This means that Alrik psychologically manipulated them into believing that Tranquility was the only option.
  • Alrik has forced Tranquility on Mages for the smallest offenses. During the personal quest with him, he can be seen attempting to force Tranquility on another mage Ella just for wanting to visit her family, despite the fact that she already passed her Harrowing. When she pleaded mercy, saying she'd do anything, Alrik just coldly replied that once she's Tranquil, she'll do anything he wants.
  • Anders also stated that Alrik experimented on mages by testing their limits before they give in to blood magic and demons, this was never confirmed, however.

Trivia[]

  • Despite his minor role, he is considered one of the most despicable villains in the Dragon Age franchise.
  • He and Vaughn Kendells are the only Dragon Age characters to be Pure Evil.
