The Oogie Boogie Man, better known as Oogie Boogie, or just Oogie, is the main antagonist of The Nightmare Before Christmas franchise.
He is the personification of the common child's nightmare of the "Boogie Man", resembling a large burlap sack full of bugs, spiders, and snakes, and has a love for gambling. He is also Jack Skellington's arch-nemesis.
In all of his appearances from 1993 to 2024, he was voiced by the late Ken Page. In the stage musical adaptation, he was portrayed by Javier Bardem, who also portrayed Armando Salazar in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Him in Mother!, and Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. In the 2020 live concert, he was played by James Monroe Iglehart, who also voices Taurus Bulba in the DuckTales 2017 reboot. In 2025 onwards, he is currently voiced by Keith David, who also voiced Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, Big Tim in Requiem For a Dream and Streaming in Regular Show, starting with the 2025 The Nightmare Before Christmas live concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He is shown to be the only truly evil resident of Halloween Town, especially since the whole town which loves scaring is scared of him.
- While he may seem fearful of Jack, he's not afraid to fight him and kill him and it doesn't take long to happen.
- Him being made of insects represents his frightening nature in addition to having next to no redeeming qualities, further symbolizing his evil.
- While he has provided several comedic moments in many of his appearances, right down to the entire joke of his character being that he is a bogeyman who is obsessed with gambling and often sings while everyone goes along with it (and the way he lusted over Sally's leg before realizing he was duped), none of these moments detract from his serious and threatening moments he consistently shows, as the characters and the narrative still take him completely seriously.
- While there are many skeletons in his lair and it's unknown if he killed those who those skeletons belong to or not, based on his personality he could've put them there to show how intimidating and scary is he.
- While Lock, Shock and Barrel have independent villainy, he is still heinous enough compared to them, as he is their leader and thus he is responsible for what they do.
Movie[]
- At the beginning of the film, he claims to be "the shadow on the moon at night" that fills your dreams to the brim with fright. Granted the vivid clarity that he enjoys causing people nightmares, it’s beyond assured to assess he does so every night.
- During the same intro song, the others state “That's our job, but we’re not mean!”, referring to Halloween Town’s general population apart from him.
- As such, he’s been an outcast since long before the Main story’s events, having been excluded from Halloween Town for his harmful and cruel ways of scaring.
- During the song "Kidnap the Sandy Claus" song, it is shown that he is a cannibal as he regularly makes his "Snake and Spider Stew": his own special, despite being made out of multiple bugs, he even uses his vaccum breath to eat bugs nearby as well.
- Lock, Shock, and Barrel themselves seem vividly familiar with his cruelty, even calling him “the meanest guy around” in their words.
- When he met Santa Claus, he mocked and tortured him for no reason other than his own sadism and twisted amusement.
- When Sally put her foot in his door as a distraction so she can save Santa, he tickled it in an lecherous manner, and he even vaccum breathed Sally and Santa once he finds them trying to escape, thus holding them hostage.
- After landing Snake Eyes on his dice, he flipped the dice over to get a victory, showing that he's a dirty cheater who gambles with the lives of other people for his own enjoyment.
- He attempted to kill Sally and Santa by dropping them into lava. Given his cruel nature, he even well implies his eagerness was more to do something horrible to them than actual “hunger”.
- After Jack saved Sally and Santa, he tried to kill Jack by having him shot to death with his firing-squad wildcards and mutilate him with a giant buzz saw blade.
Oogie’s Revenge[]
- Once he got resurrected, he immediately began planning to seize power and vengeance.
- He creates traps during his song numbers.
- He takes over Halloween Town and turned it into "Oogie Town". Just for Jack to come back the next year on December 24th, to see his reigning dictatorship rising.
- He brainwashed Dr. Finkelstein by switching his brain to create skeletons and ghost minions to attack Halloween Town peoples
- He tricks Vampire Brothers turn into bats that unable changed back and cannot back to their coffin
- He lies to everyone in Halloween Town of Jack's absence bringing a bad name to their town.
- He tried to become the "Seven Holidays King".
- He used deception and trickery to his advantage as he sent his minions for Jack to combat, as well as using two fake shadows of himself in order to distract Jack from facing the actual Oogie and also dupe him into thinking he was chasing after Oogie the whole time.
- He turns into a gigantic, crap-filled version of himself named "Mega-Oogie", a ten-story-high giant tyrannical version of himself that pukes up crap in order to fight Jack in Christmas Town and smother him in his crap.
- One of his shadows includes an "Oogie Casino", which he bets Jack's life on it.
