~ Old Nick coming face to face with Jack after raping Joy. |
Old Nick is the main antagonist of the 2015 independent drama film Room, which was based on Emma Donoghue's novel of the same name. He is a criminal who kidnapped and raped Joy "Ma" Newsome in captivity and is the biological father of her son, Jack.
He was portrayed by Sean Bridgers, who also portrays Chris Cleek in the film adaptation of The Woman.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He kidnapped and raped Joy Newsome for 7 years after luring her with a "sick dog" story, eventually resulting in her conceiving their son Jack. He even gaslights her by saying she should be grateful for paying the bills and bringing them stuff.
- In the novel, Ma miscarried a daughter due to Nick's negligence during the birth.
- He's by all means an abusive father to Jack, keeping him locked up in a garden shed isolated from the outside world.
- Shortly after Jack turns 5, Nick cuts the power as punishment for Ma getting physically aggressive with him last night. When Ma fakes Jack's fever and subsequent death, Nick reacts with more annoyance than any outright grief or genuine care, and he only agrees to Joy's plea for a distant burial in order to dispose of the body.
- Even after his arrest, Joy's PTSD due to Old Nick's actions cause her to attempt suicide, making him indirectly responsible for this.
