Captain Obed Marsh is the posthumous main antagonist of H.P. Lovecraft's 1931 horror novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth. He was a ship's captain and the founder of the Esoteric Order of Dagon who essentially ruled the town of Innsmouth until his death in 1878.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Upon learning from a tribe of South Sea islanders that he could obtain a limitless supply of gold by sacrificing people to the Deep Ones, he introduced this practice to Innsmouth in order to help his business recover from an economic depression. He and his followers, known as the Esoteric Order of Dagon, would abduct children from nearby towns and give them over to the Deep Ones at Devil's Reef, later sacrificing fishermen from nearby towns who came to Innsmouth for the catch.
- He incited the people of Innsmouth to run all the Christian priests out of town, killing those who didn't leave in time, for opposing the religion of the Deep Ones.
- He sacrificed his first mate Matt Eliot for continuing to oppose him.
- After being ratted out by some of his followers, he escaped from prison with help from the Deep Ones and had himself declared supreme leader of Innsmouth, massacring around half the town for refusing to take the Oath of Dagon before continuing with the sacrifices.
- He issued an edict forcing everyone in Innsmouth to mate with the Deep Ones, breeding human-Deep One hybrids who would eventually transform into Deep Ones and return to the sea to join the Deep Ones' army in preparation to overthrow humanity in the near future.
- Even after his death, the system he had established resulted in human sacrifices to the Deep Ones continuing until the Order's overthrow in 1927.
