~ Nyarlathotep cursing Randolph Carter out of hateful spite and warning him of who he truly is. |
Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist of the Cthulhu Mythos, the original archetype of Cosmic Horror Stories created by H.P. Lovecraft.
Also known by his moniker of the Crawling Chaos despite having many names, Nyarlathotep is an evil and sadistic outer god shapeshifting as other avatars in order to spread chaos and madness and suffering towards other innocent beings that he considered inferior including humans. He is also the servant of the Blind Idiot God known as Azathoth who is revealed to be his own father, though at some point, he does enjoy manipulating him.
He is the main antagonist of the titular 1920 short story of the same name and several stories written by Lovecraft himself and is considered to be one of the most iconic entities alongside Cthulhu due to him being the most evil and wicked being from the mythos itself.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Having the moniker "The Crawling Chaos", Nyarlathotep is an entity who loves to spread misery, pain, madness and chaos every time he shapeshifts into another entity that several of the cults worshiped.
- Unlike several Outer Gods and Great Old Ones who are often described as mindless or unfathomable rather than truly malevolent and too advanced to appreciate/follow the morality of mortal beings with the exception of Y'golonac, Nyarlathotep (while still beyond our morality) chose to act against it in complete spite of any and all entities on a lower caliber than himself, this includes the Great Old Ones and even lesser Outer Gods. With this in mind, he embraces himself to become the Crawling Chaos and genuinely enjoys causing pain and misery around him.
- Although often said to be an obedient son of Azathoth, in reality, Nyarlathotep deeply despises Azathoth, not caring about him even if the God himself killed him. The reason Nyarlathotep follows the Nuclear Sultan's orders is only out of pragmatic submission.
- At one point, as the Black Pharaoh, he drove Ancient Egypt to its ruin.
- Deceived Randolph Carter and sent him to the throne of Azathoth and his doom.
- Induced horrid nightmares and madness.
- Ruined entire societies as the Black Pharaoh.
- Possessed and murdered men as the Haunter in the Dark.
- Seduced men into worshiping his avatars.
- It has been speculated by some that he will be the one who destroys the world.
- As the Black Man, directed Keziah Mason to perform infant sacrifices to him, deceived Walter Gilman into assisting her and attempted to manipulate him into entering the court of Azathoth.
- Killed the high priest Barzai the Wise after he reached the peak of Mount Hatheg-Kla.
- As Lrogg, he demanded sacrifice in the form of removing his follower's legs.
Trivia[]
- Nyarlathotep is the most human-like Outer God in the Cthulhu Mythos as most others are portrayed as completely amoral deities beyond our understanding, whereas Nyarlathotep (while still beyond our understanding) genuinely takes pleasure in the vile acts he causes based on what we can comprehend.
- Nyarlathotep is even seen as the Devil in Lovecraftian literature as Satan is in Christian literature, although Nyarlathotep is arguably far more malevolent.
- Nyarlathotep is considered as one of the most powerful and one of the most evil characters in all of canonical fiction (let alone fiction in general) due to his unimaginable nigh-omnipotence and conceiving endless methods for atrocious slaughters and torture none could ever imagine. However, there are some exceptions where Nyarlathotep appears as a hero (though this is not canon to the source material).
- Despite similarities in theme and name, Nyarlathotep does not feature at all in Lovecraft's story The Crawling Chaos, an apocalyptic narrative written in collaboration with Elizabeth Berkeley.
- He has one of the largest numbers of different incarnations of a character who simultaneously counts as Pure Evil, rivaling multiple villains such as Satan/The Devil, Sauron, Green Goblin, Red Skull, Ultron, Ghidorah, Carnage, Unicron, Count Dracula, William Afton, Darkseid, Brainiac, Shredder, Megatron, Hugo Strange, the Joker, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Dr. Robotnik and Slender Man.
- He's also the first and so far, the only Pure Evil villain on that list to be from the Cthulhu Mythos, and one of five characters to be in the public domain, along with Count Dracula, The Claw, The Great Question, and Satan.
