The priestess of wisdom and the hero. I see you intend to interfere. How vexing. Then again, you've come here and brought the Prime Energy directly to me... The goddesses—they have taken everything from me. Now I will use their power to take it all back!
~ Null explaining its goals.

Null is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Demise) of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the 2024 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

It is a dark, ancient, and nihilistic cosmic being that once resided in the void before the creation of the world. In this empty expanse, it consumed anything that dared to emerge, causing constant chaos and destruction out of the desire to return all of existence to nothingness. In response, the Golden Goddesses—the divine creators of Hyrule—sealed it beneath the land, imprisoning it for millennia to prevent its destructive influence from consuming the world.

Thousands of years later, after the defeat of Ganon, it was inadvertently released, its power growing once more. Returning with a singular purpose, it seeks to ensure that it is the only thing left in existence—its ultimate goal being the eradication of everything and the restoration of the creation to the nothingness from which it came. To accomplish this, it possessing countless beings across Hyrule and corrupting them to do its bidding, where it create rifts—vortexes that tear through reality, distorting time and space, and opening pathways to other timelines. These rifts plague Hyrule, consuming everything in their path, and are the true source of the corruption and monstrous creatures that threaten the land.

It is the true origin of the rifts, which serve as the conduits for its influence, allowing it to spread its chaos far and wide. Its existence has left an indelible mark on the world, twisting both the landscape and the people of Hyrule, as it continues to strive toward its cataclysmic goal.

What Makes It Pure Evil?[]

Background/In General[]

  • When it first existed, it would consume anything it could for the sake of ensuring it would be the only thing in existence.
    • When the Golden Goddesses sealed it away, it continued to make more rifts with the intention of turning the world into the Still World, a dimension where any victims that are consumed by the rifts are subjected to fates worse than death.
      • The fact that the victims are subjected to fates worse than death is not Fridge Horror, as the game shows them petrified and unable to speak.
  • Despite being a nihilistic entity, it is shown to have a clear moral agency and willingly commits its crimes.
  • Due to consuming everything it could, it is responsible for the creation of the world, and by extension, most of the tragedies caused by various other Zelda villains including Demise's curse, combined with its high attempted kill count, making it the most heinous villain in the franchise.
  • Its excuse of merely wanting to take back what the Golden Goddesses took from it does not hold up, as it brought its misery unto itself by indiscriminately consuming all life it could.
  • There's no indication it has any care for its Teccums.

In Game[]

  • It had Ganon kidnap Zelda and attempt to kill Link.
    • When Link defeats the echo, it uses the trident to open up a rift which imprisons Link for Null to create a Teccum of.
  • When Zelda informs the King of what had happened, it sucks him into the still world, has a Teccum impersonate him, and sentences Zelda to death, framing her for the rifts.
  • It uses its magic to imprison hundreds of Tri's friends in the rifts, and send various Teccums to wreak havoc across Hyrule, causing issues in a few regions.
    • It sends a Teccum of Lord Jabu-Jabu to eat two Zora children, and later attempts to kill Zelda with it.
    • Gohma spreading its webs across the Deku region, which the Deku end up eating due to mistaking it for Cotton Candy.
  • After Zelda defeated Ganon in the stilled Hyrule Castle, Null attacked and would have killed her if Link hadn't fought it off.
  • When Zelda finishes the last 3 dungeons, it creates Tekom to impersonate her and knock out 3 castle guards, including General Wright, who are later shown unconscious in the eternal forest.
  • After being confronted, it attempts to drain the Triforce of its Prime Energy and steals the Triforce of Power, before forcing Link and Zelda to go through a tedious dungeon.
  • During the final battle, it gleefully gloats about its intentions of "taking back what the Goddesses took from it" (i.e. erasing all existence but itself) and attempts to kill Link and Zelda to steal the remaining Triforce pieces.
