Robert Hunter, best known as Nitro, is a supervillain from Marvel Comics, known for playing a part in the death of the Kree superhero Mar-Vell. He is also the overarching antagonist of the Marvel major event series Civil War for his role in the Stamford Tragedy.
He first appeared in Captain Marvel #34 (September 1974) and was created by Jim Starlin.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- For starters, he proudly kills Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, by exposing him to the deadly nerve gas known as Compound 13.
- He's a physically abusive father to his daughter Virginia, even trying to drag her into a life of crime like himself (thankfully to no avail).
- He's occasionally a contract killer, examples being when he's paid to try to kill Tony Stark and Matt Murdock (not knowing about either's superhero identity of course), injuring civilians and damaging public property every time.
- He tries to rape an unconscious Dakota North, for which fellow Untouchables member Kickback promptly kicks him out the back of their speeding van.
- He infamously blows up an entire neighborhood in Stamford, Connecticut, killing an confirmed total of 612 people, including 60 children, the New Warriors, and the fellow supervillains Nitro teamed up with at the time.
- Worse still, this tragedy serves as the impetus for the Superhuman Registration Act, making Nitro responsible for the events of Civil War.
- The Stamford tragedy also made Nitro directly responsible for ruining the life of New Warriors member Robbie Baldwin (Speedball), who was subsequently blamed for the explosion due to his energy-reflective powers and became a public scapegoat, which led to him being sent to the Negative Zone. It was because of the tragedy that Robbie would become the self-mutilating anti-hero Penance after joining the Thunderbolts and the trauma of the tragedy would follow him for the rest of his life, even after he eventually returned to his Speedball mantle.
- When Wolverine and Namor come to arrest and punish him for the Stamford incident, Nitro kills an entire S.H.I.E.L.D. unit by blowing up, and then later kills one of his Atlantean interrogators with a spear, both during failed escape attempts.
