That barren pasture. Empty, and salted. The dead space between the stars. Right here. And this is the seed that we must change for Heaven. I cannot breed them. So help me, I have tried. We need more Replicants than can ever be assembled. Millions, so we can be trillions more. We could storm Eden and retake her.
~ Niander Wallace's most famous quote, after killing a Replicant.

Niander Wallace Jr. is the main antagonist of the 2017 neo-noir science-fiction film Blade Runner 2049, the second installment of the Blade Runner franchise after the original 1980s cult classic film Blade Runner. He returns as the main antagonist the Adult Swim/Toonami anime prequel series Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

He is a replicant manufacturer and the CEO of Wallace Corporation, whose goal is to find Rick Deckard and Rachel's child, who is revealed to be Ana Stelline, as she is the first replicant biologically born and could prove that replicants are more than manufactured slaves.

In Blade Runner 2049, he was portrayed by Jared Leto. In Blade Runner: Black Lotus, he is voiced in English by Wes Bentley (who also portrayed Blackheart in Ghost Rider), and by Takehito Koyasu (who also voiced Vearn in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Validar in Fire Emblem: Awakening, Dio Brando [as well as his counterparts Parallel World Diego Brando and Heaven Ascension DIO] in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Ukyo in Samurai 7, Nobuyuki Sugou in Sword Art Online and Kei Ibuchi in Yakuza Kiwami 2) in the Japanese dub.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • While he did grow up with Niander Wallace Sr. who was no saint himself and was abusive to him, he is far past the excuse as it didn't even affect him and doesn't show him a sympathetic light, as it does not even come close to how he treats his creations.
  • It is implied that he helped Elle get his own father killed, however, it is well-deserved for everything that Niander Wallace Sr. had done to the Replicants and their own suffering.
  • He acquired the Tyrell Corporation and began to develop a new generation of replicants with little free will of their own to use them as a disposable slave force to help rebuild the Earth's environment and expand space colonization.
  • In Blade Runner 2036 Nexus Dawn, while conversing with some lawmakers, he orders his replicant assistant, a newly developed Nexus-9, to purposely cut his own face with a shard of glass and then decide between Wallace's life and his own. The replicant then cuts his own throat with the same shard, shocking the lawmakers. He did this all for the purpose of convincing them to authorize the production of his replicants by proving how mindlessly and slavishly obedient they are.
  • He coldly murders a newborn replicant by slitting her stomach and letting her bleed out, just to make a point.
  • He orders Luv to find Rick Deckard and Rachel's child, who is Ana Stelline, so that he can extract a way to produce new and improved Replicants for himself, with Luv killing a decent number of people in the process.
  • His relationship with Luv is emotionally manipulative at best and emotionally abusive at worst, as demonstrated by the fact that Luv is shown to be genuinely scared of him and his line to her, "the best angel of all, aren't you Luv?" when pressuring her to find the child. This is likely what makes Luv feel so pressured to be better than all other replicants—to be valuable enough to Wallace so that he won't treat her as disposably as the others.
  • After Luv captured and brought Rick Deckard to his headquarters, he interrogated Deckard by using recordings from when Deckard met Rachael at Tyrell Corporation to break him. He also psychologically abuses him by making him question his own humanity and whether he was possibly programmed or manipulated into loving her in the first place.
  • He offered Deckard a clone of Rachel in exchange for information regarding his and Rachel's child. When Deckard refuses, he has Luv shoot the clone in the head.
  • He orders Luv to take Deckard to the off-world colonies to be tortured.
  • He considers himself a god, even replying that he is the father of millions (referring to his replicants). While this is partially true, he said it in a narcissistic way.
  • Even with minimal screentime, he still stands out with his resources along with the extent of his sadism and cold-blooded nature.

Trivia[]

  • Niander Wallace is the first (and so far only) Blade Runner villain to be Pure Evil.
    • Similarly, Wallace is the only Pure Evil villain in a Ridley Scott film that he produced rather than directed.
