Seiros! I will kill you! Do not get in my way!
~ Nemesis
You are all pathetic weaklings! You lack the courage to challenge me in lone combat.
~ Nemisis belittling Byleth and Claude for working as a team.

Nemesis, also known as the King of Liberation and the Fell King, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Epimenides) within the Fódlan Saga of Nintendo's Fire Emblem franchise.

He is the overarching antagonist of the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses, as well as the final boss of the Verdant Wind route.

He is an ambitious and power-hungry warlord who is responsible for the creation of the Crests, the war upon Fódlan, and the demise of Sothis. In one form or another, Nemesis is responsible for every tragedy and atrocity that has ever transpired throughout Fódlan history. He is the archenemy of Seiros.

He initially serves as a historical figure for most of the game, but in the Verdant Wind route, particularly in the final chapter, Nemesis serves as a much more important figure when he becomes the route's final threat after his unexpected revival by the forces of Those Who Slither in the Dark.

He was voiced by Naomi Kusumi in Japanese and by Jamieson Price in English.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Despite committing most of his crimes under the influence of the slithers (Agarthans), he still committed them merely to gain power.
  • Even when the slithers were the ones who were responsible for giving him the power he desired, Nemesis never once shows any sign of loyalty or gratitude towards them, which heavily suggests that their relationship is professional and pragmatic at best.
    • In addition to that, Epimenides, one of the slithers' leaders, plotted to get rid of him once their war with Seiros was over, which heavily implies that the slithers only view Nemesis as a tool for their plans.
  • He has no care for his Ten Elites, as he was willing to lie to some of the members about having "noble intentions" for Fódlan, when in reality, all he cares about is having power.
  • He possesses a Social Darwinist view, believing that it is the natural order for the strong to rule the weak. This is more evident that he belittles Byleth and Claude for working together and denying him a one-on-one duel.
    • He's also rather hypocritical of that, since he spends the majority of the final battle behind his Ten Elites. Not to mention that he murdered Sothis, a powerful deity, in her sleep.

Background[]

  • Before becoming the infamous warlord, Nemesis was already the leader of a gang of bandits, indicating that he was already a bad man prior to being influenced by the slithers.
  • Wanting to gain more power and influence, he accepted a request from the slithers to sneak into the Holy Tomb and murdered the sleeping Sothis.
  • After murdering Sothis, he and the slithers plundered her body by turning her bones into the Sword of the Creator, her heart into a Crest Stone, and her blood into the Crest of Flames.
  • At the slithers' request, he massacred the entire Children of the Goddess (AKA the Nabatean Race), and just like Sothis, plundered their bodies, turning them into Crests, Crest stones, and weapons. This led to the creation of the "Ten Elites of Fódlan", the supposed heroes of Fódlan who were in reality a part of Nemesis' bandit group.
  • Nemesis then fought against the Four Saints, led by Seiros, the daughter of Sothis, and the future founder of the Adrestian Empire Wilhelm I in the War of the Heroes. Many people were killed as a result of the conflict, until Seiros killed him in the Battle of Taitean Plains.
  • His genocidal actions and war crimes left a devastating impact on the Nabatean survivors such as:
    • Seiros, the daughter of Sothis. Following the death of her mother and her family, Seiros became extremely vengeful towards the warlord, and even caused her misguided hatred and resentement towards humanity. This also caused her to become heavily obsessed with bringing back Sothis, creating several vessels to achieve it.
    • Saint Cichol and Saint Cethleann. Cethleann took major injuries during the war, which left Cichol overly protective of her that he isolated her from the world by placing her in Zanado, being completely alone as a result. Because of Nemesis, the two of them were heavily traumatized from the war.
    • Saint Macuil, who grew to distrust and hold contempt for humanity, outright refusing to work with Seteth on rescuing Seiros/Rhea since that would mean being a part of humanity's war.
  • Despite his death, his actions continued to impact the Fódlan Saga, as Seiros and the Church were force to fabricate false propaganda regarding him and the Crests due to his status as a "hero" of Fódlan. Thus, the Crest System (AKA the Heroes Relics) was born and was used by nobles across the land to gain power and influence, while traumatically affecting the majority of the major characters (especially Edelgard) as they were subject through horrible experiences, such as abuse.
    • This also makes him responsible for the slithers' current actions, the corruption within the noble system of Fódlan (which would lead to events like the Insurrection of the Seven and the Tragedy of Duscar), Edelgard's tragic upbringing and her rise to villainy, Dimitri and Serios/Rhea's trauma and mental problems, and the five year conflict in Fódlan.

The Verdant Wind Route[]

  • When resurrected by the slithers after 1000 years, Nemesis immediately began his quest for vengeance against Seiros, leading attacks on multiple cities, causing countless casualties as a result.
  • He and his army marched to Garreg Mach Monastery to kill his arch-nemesis and destroy the Church and kill everyone in it.
  • He nearly killed Holst Sigiswald Goneril, forcing the Goneril and Glouchester forces to retreat from the battle.
  • He fought against Byleth, Claude, and the Golden Deer and tried to kill them for interfering in his quest to kill Seiros.
  • Doesn't mourn the Ten Elites' deaths when they're killed by the Golden Deer house, clearly showing that he views them as pawns.
  • Although being undead does give Nemesis moral agency issues, Nemesis was already a brutal warlord in life, and the fact he wants revenge on Seiros all but confirms that he still has enough agency to know what he is doing.
