The "Necro-Monster" is the main antagonist of the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episode "The Darkness Within". It is a malevolent entity that arrived on Earth and served as a corrupting influence.
It was voiced by Ben Townsend.
What Makes It Pure Evil?[]
- Shortly after arriving on Earth, it attempted to corrupt a tribe of Natives into embracing their darker side.
- When the Natives proved themselves to be too strong to be corrupted, it called out to people from across the sea and had them invade the land, promising them gold if they did it. Because of its influence, one of them, C.F. Volpehart, killed the leader of the tribe and he and the others wipe out the rest of them.
- It gave C.F. Volpehart immortality, not out of honor or care for him, but so that he could serve it for hundreds of years. Volpehart eventually regretted this and viewed his immortality as a curse.
- It lured thousands of people into its lair and trapped them in pods. These people would be forced to experience their worst fears as the creature drained their lives, trapping them in in a horrendous fate that was arguably worse than death.
- After he escaped, the creature itself confronted Leonardo and tried to forcibly corrupt him, nearly succeeding.
- Even after its supposed defeat, he manages to corrupt a suited man carrying a briefcase, presumably repeating what he did during the episode for years to come off-screen.
- Although it is an eldritch being, there is nothing that indicates it is made of evil or lacks moral agency.
- While other villains did worse, like the Utrom Shredder, who was willing to destroy the multiverse and Savanti Romero, who tried to erase humanity from existence and remake the universe, or the Councilor of the Brotherhood, who led his race to devour entire species across multiple planets, the Necro-Monster stands out enough by killing thousands of people and committing the unique crime of forcing them to experience their worst fears before slowly draining them, that too with lesser resources than the aforementioned villains as they have vast armies serving them, alien technology and the Time Scepter.
Trivia[]
- It's one of the few villains in the entire series to presumably accomplish their goals (albeit off-screen) because, as mentioned above, he managed to corrupt a suited man carrying a briefcase at the end of the episode.
- The entire series, the character and his servant, are obviously references to Lovecraft's work. The Necro Monster resembles Cthulhu and Shub-Niggurath, and his former servant Volpehart is very obviously a reference to Lovecraft himself.
