~ Muscular to Kota Izumi about why he killed his parents. |
Goto Imasuji, better known by his villain's name, Muscular, also known as Jailbreaker, is a minor antagonist in the My Hero Academia franchise.
He is a member of the League of Villains' Vanguard Action Squad as well as a psychopathic madman with a strong desire for murder, having killed many people in the past, including Kota's parents.
In the anime, he is voiced by Kosuke Takaguchi in the Japanese dub and Jim Foronda in the English dub.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He once attacked a village with the intention of killing everyone there, presumably killing many people.
- He killed the superhero duo Water Hose (with heavy implications; he tortured them before doing so) when they tried to stop him from destroying the village, leaving their son Kota Izumi orphaned and hating Hero Society.
- He would later elaborate and taunt Kota over this.
- Joined the League of Villains only so he could kill more people.
- While he was perfectly happy to assist them in capturing Katsuki Bakugo, he repeatedly asked for the League to hurry up as they prepared for their mission, desperately wanting to fight and kill the students of U.A.
- After finding Kota, he attempted to kill him, showing that he is not above child murder. Had Izuku Midoriya aka Deku, not been there, he would have succeeded.
- During their fight, he broke Deku's arm and beat him very badly while continuously toying with him and mocking him for being weak and unable to protect Kota.
- When he realized Kota was Water Hose's child, he showed no remorse for murdering them and mocked Kota for them "trying to do something they weren't able to do" before trying to kill him a second time.
- He sadistically tried to crush Deku to death, while promising Kota he would kill him right after.
- He forced Deku to use his expended arm, causing permanent damage to his right arm.
- When All For One and Tomura Shigaraki broke into Tartarus, he killed several guards there (along with Moonfish) and broke out of the prison.
- Under the orders of All For One, Muscular took charge of breaking into six high-security prisons and freeing many dangerous prisoners across Japan (minus one of the prisons that had no escapees thanks to Gentle’s intervention), earning him the nickname "Jailbreaker," as well as putting Japan into a state of disarray and worsening the conflict between the heroes and villains.
- Attacked a city with the intention of causing as much chaos and destruction as possible before torturing Yo Shindo, a mere teenager, in their fight when he tried to stop him by trying to crush Yo to death like he attempted with Deku in their battle, even being shown as upset at the start of the fight that only two of them were there, wishing there had been more for him to kill.
- During his rematch with Deku, when the hero tries to reason with him and better understand him, Muscular refuses to back down or find a way to settle things peacefully, openly saying his only wish is to live his life with no regrets by doing whatever he wants and killing as he pleases.
- While one may argue Muscular fails the series' massive heinous standards compared to other villains like Flect Turn, All For One, Kai Chisaki, Gigantomachia, Daruma Ujiko, and Tomura Shigaraki, he still stands out for having less resources than them, murdering Kota's parents (which has a major impact on the story by causing Kota's hatred of heroes), breaking countless criminals out of prison to kill people for fun, and being the only one with no distinctive motive other than killing countless people simply for his own amusement.
- He has no clear loyalty to anyone, and he only follows Shigaraki’s and All For One’s orders out of pragmatism and him being able to do what he wants afterward.
- While he does have his own set of honor and ideals, such as believing in living up to one's words and standing by them (to the point where he openly admits he holds no grudge against Water Hose for his eye), it's not really as a redeeming quality, since he uses that "honor" to absolve himself of any blame for his horrific actions by claiming it the Water Hose's were responsible for their own deaths since they "couldn't live up to their words to save people."
- He has no comedic moments, and the one that seems to be comedic (where he attempts to trade his mask for Kota’s hat), is quickly flipped in an attempt to kill Kota.
- Although villains such as Twice, Toga, and especially Shigaraki were dealt bad hands in life that made them who they are, Muscular is a rare case of a villain in this universe who is evil for the sake of evil and even the tragic villains can have moments of decency. Any decent moments Muscular has are either virtually nonexistent or quickly flipped.
Trivia[]
- Despite being a somewhat minor character, Muscular is one of the only two My Hero Academia villains to be Pure Evil, alongside Kuin Hachisuka. He is also the only one that comes from the original manga, as Kuin came from Vigilantes.
- When asked in an interview which villains in the series he considered to be beyond saving, Kohei Horikoshi (The creator of My Hero Academia) stated he felt "characters like Muscular who find great happiness in killing others would fit that category." This shows that even Horikoshi himself views Muscular as an irredeemable monster highlighting his Pure Evil status.
- Before the Tartarus Escapees Arc, Muscular did not count as Pure Evil despite his resources, and while he still stood out for being responsible for Kota's parents' deaths and being a sadistic murderer who had no standards at all, he still didn't do enough compared to villains like Flect Turn, All For One, Kai Chisaki, Daruma Ujiko, and Tomura Shigaraki, and some could argue his worst villainy was off-screen. However, it was then decided his actions had onscreen effects to not count as off-screen villainy, and after the Tartarus Escapees Arc, Muscular became even worse as he killed multiple guards, broke countless inmates out of multiple other prisons in Japan and attacked cities to kill countless people for pure sadism, and therefore, he did do enough to finally be qualified as Pure Evil.
