From them on, Misaki would stalk me... ...Just to prey on the ghosts by my side. I was then to fall on hard times. I lost my job and my house just like that. I caught something nasty on the streets and so I came claim to dear life in the hospital. Misaki came to visit again today. I can hear her licking her lips in waiting... waiting for my ghost to appear.
~ The end epilogue from Shigeru's point of view of what happened afterwards after Yuina's ghost was eaten by Misaki, and moments before his death

Misaki is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito manga "I Don't Want to Be a Ghost", sometimes entitled as "Anything But a Ghost".

She is a seemingly innocent looking woman who has the ability to detect the spirits of those who have died as a result of being breastfed by her mother who died giving birth to her and was a ghost. She appears to get in relationships with unsuspecting men so that she can eat the ghosts that follow them.

In the manga, she meets up with a young man named Shigeru, who finds her in the middle of the forest.

What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]

  • The manga implies that Misaki had eaten the ghosts of many people, including those of unborn fetuses.
  • Misaki claims that she obtained her ability to see ghosts because she was breastfed by her mother, who was also a ghost, as an infant. Despite this, Misaki doesn't show any true love or affection for her, and only seems to remember how delicious her breast milk was. Additionally, she was still willing to eat ghosts even though she had a ghostly mother who cared for her.
  • Although Misaki claims that she needs to feed on the substance that ghosts are made out of in order to survive, the way she goes about eating them is rather sadistic, having to find ways to torment her victims before they die.
    • For Yuina, after Misaki has a temporary affair with Shigeru, she tells Yuina that Shigeru cheated on her, which makes her violent, and eventually leads to her killing herself.
    • For Shigeru, after Yuina's death, followed by Misaki eating the ghost of her and her unborn child, Shigeru loses his job and his house, and gains a terminal illness that gets him hospitalized.
  • At the love hotel that Shigeru and Misaki stay at, Misaki states that the reason why she dated him was solely because he is constantly haunted by spirits, and for no other reason, showing that she doesn't actually care about him as a person.
  • After Yuina kills herself, Shigeru and Misaki attend her funeral. There, she can sense the spirits of both Yuina and her unborn baby, and she proceeds to chase them around the room, grab them, and then eat them, which causes a large blood splatter on the wall, and gleefully does all of this in front of Shigeru as he hears Yuina's screams.
  • After the above incident, she continues to stalk Shigeru so that she can keep eating the spirits that haunt him until he eventually dies.
  • As Shigeru is on the brink of death, Misaki is stalking his deathbed, eagerly anticipating for him to die so that she can eat his ghost.
