Did you know that prophecies are just stories? Fables, you know, uh...tonterías. They're there to make children believe their parents are in control.
~ Mictlan manipulating the Teca army to war.
Monster? I am the god of WAR!!!
~ Mictlan’s most famous quote before engaging the Teca army.

Lord Mictlan is the main antagonist of the 2021 Netflix limited series Maya and the Three.

He is the bloodthirsty Mayan God of War and ruler of the Underworld, who aspires to sacrifice the demigod princess Maya, the series’ protagonist and his arch-nemesis, and gain an increase in power to rule the Land of the Living.

He was voiced by Alfred Molina, who also played Maxim Horvath in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Ke-Pa in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the On Her Majesty's Secret Service radio drama adaptation and Destiny in Justice League Dark.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He was already a cruel god who has no empathy or pity for humans and is also particularly feared by the gods.
  • He was once a European knight who came to Mesoamerica with the conquistadors, a role he shared with his two brothers, Xibalba and El Chamuco, implying he may have been involved in the bloody conquest of Mesoamerica.
  • Even though he was married to Micte, the Goddess of Death, she grew repulsed by her husband's savage behaviour and power-lust.
    • Plus, he never loved her to begin with as he didn't care about her personal happiness at all, forcing her to abandon her biological daughter and never interact with her, and had zero qualms with killing her later on.
  • While Camazotz convinced Mictlan to spare Zatz, his demigod son, he took one of Zatz's eyes, leaving him with an eyepatch for the rest of his life.
  • When the Tecas encountered him, he slaughtered them by making them turn on each other. Only Maya's father was spared, and the weapons of Maya's brothers were returned to her by a regretful Zatz.
  • Sent Zatz to retrieve Maya, this time accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Acat, the vicious Goddess of Tattoos.
    • Maya fought Acat off with the help of Zatz, who was conspiring against Mictlan with his father. Once Acat failed to retrieve Maya and didn't reveal Zatz's location, he murdered her by ripping out her heart and devouring it to become powerful.
  • When Maya challenged him to single combat. Mictlan laughed at them, threatening to punish the Three's respective homes for this, and used his powers to make them turn on Maya.
    • Though she was able to break them out of the trance, Mictlan bested them all with ease and strapped Maya to the sacrificial table, preparing to kill her.
  • Once Camazotz tried to kill Mictlan, the latter later revealed that he already knew that he and his son were conspiring against him from the start, right before he ripped his heart out and devoured it to become even stronger than ever.
  • Tried to kill Maya and the Three as they were trying to escape the Divine Gate, forcing Picchu to sacrifice himself to give his friends time to escape by destroying the gate.
  • He made Vucuub blind by taking his eyes for betraying him.
  • While initially heartbroken over Micte's betrayal and being given a chance to redeem himself, he refuses and declares himself "the God of War".
  • After battling Maya and Zatz, Mictlan summoned forth an army of skeletal conquistadors, most likely the remains of the ones he served with in life.
  • After aid from the neighboring kingdoms began to turn the tide of the battle, he killed and devoured the hearts of Cabrakan, Cipactli, Hura, Can, Bone, Chivo, and Xtabay to increase his power. It turned out to be so much that his body exploded into a circular pool of gold liquid, however, it did not kill him as he became a gigantic two-headed snake.
    • In this form, Mictlan was completely animalistic, lacking any human traits he had left, though his desire for Maya and his enemies' destruction remained.
    • To make matters worse, in his final form, he poisoned Micte with his poisonous bite and murdered Zatz by devouring him, much to Maya's sadness.
    • He also devoured Vucuub, the latter who was sacrificing himself to save Chimi and the Widow Queen.
  • In order to prevent Maya from killing him, Mictlan launches his fire breath to kill her once and for all. However, it was his downfall as she successfully stabbed his heart, thus destroying him (alongside her) in the process.

Trivia[]

  • In the Spanish version for Latin America, Mictlan was voiced by Joaquín Cosío, who also played General Medrano, another Pure Evil villain, in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. Incidentally, Mictlan's original voice actor Alfred Molina voiced James Bond's arch-nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the On Her Majesty’s Secret Service radio drama adaptation.
  • He is one of two villains from Maya and the Three to be Pure Evil, the other being Xtabay.
