“ | You see, I became bored with hunting animals. That's why I prefer to hunt men. You have an intellect. That's what makes you a challenge. Oh and David, if it helps think of chess. Like in chess, think twice about everything you do because unlike chess, when this game is over, the board can't be set up again. | „ |
~ Michael Sutton to David Banner about his "game" |
Michael Sutton is the main antagonist of the Incredible Hulk episode "The Snare".
He was portrayed by the late Bradford Dillman.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He had animals imported to his island so he could kill them for fun.
- Lured men to his island with his charisma, and later drugged them to put them through deadly traps that would get them killed-seeing it as nothing more than a game. All of it out of boredom from hunting animals and seeking men for their intellect, declaring them more of a challenge.
- He killed 5 men and put photos he took of them on his wall-also burying their bodies in his own personal graveyard he made for them. He intended to do the same to David Banner.
- What's worst, it's implied he wanted to kill David because the latter beat him at chess.
- Unlike all other villains on the show, who were either tragic or simply out for money, Michael has no sympathy and does everything he does out of pure sadism. It was also rare for any character on the show to be a serial killer.
- He showed sadistic delight in watching David struggle to find his way out of one of his traps through the keyhole of the door to the room he caught him in.
- As David is falling asleep from the whine Sutton had drugged, Michael feigns concern for David as he's falling to table in a drowsy stupor, only to taunt him about that being his "move" before David fell asleep.
- He became obsessed with the Hulk and tortured David with a whip to provoke him enough to bring the beast out so he could kill him.
- Despite clearly being insane, he knows full well that what he's doing is wrong as he lies to David about his intentions to invite him over to his island before trapping him. He was also smart enough to manipulate other victims prior and set up sophisticated traps for them only he knew how to beat.
- It's made perfectly clear that he doesn't play fair in any of his games which is why he's so successful:
- He left an obvious net for David to find so he would think that was the trap. This left David unprepared for his real trap which was a pit that David ended up falling through.
- He damaged one of his boats so David couldn't escape.
- As David found the key to get out of a room Sutton had trapped him in, Sutton had left a swinging anchor of sorts to hit David once he unlocked the door covering the window to get out, despite the fact that David fairly avoided all of his other traps to get to the key-as Sutton's recording only warned him of the traps he would have to face in order to get to the key, but not the one after he found it.
- He left the escape boat on the dock for David and a recording of him congratulating him-only to reveal that he had booby trapped the dock so an explosion would kill David once the recording stopped, indicating that he never intended for David to win and was prepared in case he were to die instead of his victim.
Trivia[]
