Mephis and Pheles are the main antagonists of the action RPG Crystar. They are the managers of Purgatory and are tasked to recover Ideas from human tears. While at first, they did their job properly, they soon found enjoyment in causing human emotional suffering. They called themselves Demons and would toy with humans coming to Purgatory.
What Makes Them Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- They emotionally tortured humans who come to Purgatory to gather their ideas as well as for their own entertainment.
- While humans' emotions were necessary to create ideas, they went far beyond what was necessary, treating them like toys until they broke.
- They used humans to do their work by making contracts with them, promising them Revival in exchange. However, not only were they treating them as slaves, only a few of them would achieve Revival.
- Furthermore, considering how they liked to cause emotional trauma, it was likely the surviving human would end up traumatized.
- While Pheles said many times she liked Rei, this was only because she liked to see her suffer in her quest to save her sister, and as soon as Rei wasn't to her liking anymore, she tried to kill her.
- Furthermore, the Memoir of the Dead mentioned that she did that to many girls before.
- While they seemed to get along well, it was because of their sadistic tendencies, and they never showed care for each other.
Background[]
- When they found a soul of a girl named Nanami Ataraxia, they turned her into a Revenant.
- They turned the soul of a murderer named Kyosuke Tomasu into a Revenant, but Mephis after not being satisfied, decided to give him an insatiable hunger, making him addicted to souls.
- Kyosuke would also eat many souls as a result until his death.
- When Rei became very desperate, they killed her dog Thelema to see her in pain.
Third World[]
- After Anamnesis' death by Kokoro, Mephis passed herself for the former and convinced Sen to take revenge against Kokoro.
- They caused discord in Rei's group by taking each one of the group's identity and making hurtful statements to them:
- As Sen, they told Rei about how selfish she was for dragging people with her only to save her sister.
- As Kokoro, they bragged to Sen about how she loved to kill Amnanesis despite knowing she was Sen's mother.
- As Nanana, they provoked Kokoro about how her revenge was pointless and that her dead unborn baby was lucky to not be born to a mother like her.
- As Rei, they treated Nanana as a simple Revenant instead of a friend.
- They allied with Mirai and gave her the power of the Purgatory Prison. Mirai would use it to lock Rei's party and force them to kill each other until only one remains. In the end, only Rei survived.
- They showed Rei the truth about their implication in everything before killing her and taking her ideas.
Fourth World[]
- They tried to kill Rei when she got her memories from the previous world.
- They tried to kill Rei's group at the Pedestal of Torture.
- They used the contract with the heroes to take control of them and have them kill each other, remembering their deaths in the previous world. They would have succeeded without the intervention of Mirai and Amnanesis.
- They fused into Mephistopheles and tried to kill Rei's group one last time.
