AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Finally, the seal is broken! At long last, I'll be able to join with you! Iblis! Now, Chaos Emerald... It's time for the final curtain call!

Mephiles the Dark is the main antagonist of the 2006 platform video game Sonic the Hedgehog and a minor antagonist in the 2024 platform video game Shadow Generations.

He is a malevolent entity of darkness who was accidentally created during the ill-fated Solaris Project that split the Sun God Solaris into two beings - Mephiles himself as the mind and will, and Iblis as the raw power, but was later sealed in the Scepter of Darkness. Mephiles then took Shadow's form after being freed, with the intention to unleash Iblis to fuse with him and turn back into Solaris.

He was voiced by Takayuki Sakazume in the Japanese version, and by Dan Green in the English version, and Robbie Daymond in Shadow Generations, who also voiced Alan Sylvasta in BNA: Brand New Animal.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Despite being evil from the time he was created, as well as being the very embodiment of darkness itself, this does not make him made of evil due to him being the personification of Solaris' mind and will, rather than the direct malice itself. There is also nothing in the game that ever implies being made of darkness has any effect on moral agency.
  • He stands out as the most heinous and darkest villain in the entire Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, as he not only came close to destroying all time and realities, but also manipulated many people to reach his goals and killed Sonic, surpassing Dr. Eggman, Eggman Nega, the Time Eater, and even other Pure Evils like Black Doom, Erazor Djinn, and Infinite, with the only villain that managed to come close to him being The End. He also lacks a tragic backstory, comedic moments, or redeeming qualities and is taken completely seriously as the most dangerous and powerful villain that the heroes have ever faced.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

  • He destroyed Eggman's robots and sucked out Shadow's own shadow to take the form of him, before sending Shadow and Rouge into the future thanks to his newly given chronokinetic powers.
  • He manipulated Blaze the Cat and Silver the Hedgehog, under the form of Shadow, into thinking Sonic was the "Iblis Trigger", stating what would happen if Iblis got unleashed, and thus ordered them to kill him within that period, which is all part of his master plan into unleashing Iblis his way.
  • He reveals to Omega that he was using him, and a reasonable purpose for him is to defeat Shadow in the future.
  • While he does have a hatred of all life, he uses this to manipulate Shadow, to which Shadow calls him out saying that Mephiles has no desire for any revenge against humanity and only craves destruction.
    • This means that Mephiles is completely unaffected by his backstory of being exploited in the Solaris Project.
  • He uses the purple Chaos Emerald to blind Sonic and Elise then kills Sonic by impaling the latter, which was his popularly infamous Moral Event Horizon crossing and was the first time a Sonic villain actually succeeded in murdering him, albeit temporarily.
    • The death of Sonic causes Elise to cry over him, causing Iblis to be released from her body, allowing Mephiles to successfully fuse with him to form Solaris.
    • He is technically right that Sonic was an indirect "Iblis Trigger", but this summons Iblis, not destroy it, making it only a step in Mephiles' plan.
  • While he could've traveled back in time and easily killed Elise to unleash Iblis, he specifically chooses a method that would psychologically torture and torment many, both to fulfill his sadistic enjoyment and eliminate any threats to his destruction of reality.
  • When he and Iblis fuse to become Solaris,
    • He engulfs the Soleanna Castle Town into ashes before transporting Elise and Sonic, along with Sonic's allies and Eggman, to their next location.
    • He transforms Earth into an endless dimension that would be later devoured by him.
    • He attempts to destroy all timelines and life in existence without hesitation.

Shadow Generations[]

  • After he is brought back due to the actions of the Time Eater and Black Doom, many temporal alterations are stirred up. This includes Mephiles, who is drawn from the temporal alterations to return, he immediately tries to kill Shadow, so he can restore himself to the timeline, given Solaris was erased from existence.
  • Despite showing to be desperate to restore himself to the timeline and wanting to come back to existence, this is certainly not sympathetic or redeeming in any way, given he has little to no change, with it being clear he still only cares about becoming Solaris to destroy the multiverse.
  • While he claims that he might spare Shadow during his boss fight, it's likely a lie as he was still attacking Shadow.
  • While he is upset that Shadow forgot about him again during his boss fight, this isn't truly sympathetic because he deserves to be forgotten for everything he did, Mephiles is also aware of his own displacement.
  • After being defeated and sealed way once more in the Scepter of Darkness while proclaiming his desire to just exist, with Shadow claiming he has no future, he deserves this for his vile and destructive actions.

Trivia[]

  • None of his Archie Comics counterparts are Pure Evil, as his Prime Zone counterpart never appears on-page, and all his crimes likewise happened off-page and were only detailed in supplementary material, while his Zone Jail counterpart does almost nothing villainous and is played for laughs.
