~ Mephiles the Dark introducing himself. |
Mephiles the Dark is the main antagonist of the 2006 platform game Sonic the Hedgehog, serving as the main antagonist of Shadow's Story, the secondary antagonist of Silver's Story and the overarching antagonist of Sonic's Story. He's one of the two arch-nemesis (alongside Black Doom) of Shadow the Hedgehog.
He is best described as an evil, demonic being who was accidentally created during the ill-fated Solaris Project that split into two beings himself and Iblis, he was later sealed in the Scepter of Darkness. Mephiles then took Shadow's form after being freed. He is also the mind and will of Solaris while Iblis was the raw power.
He was voiced by Takayuki Sakazume in the Japanese version, and by Dan Green in the English version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He killed Eggman's robots and sucked out Shadow's own shadow to take the form of him, before sending Shadow and Rouge into the future thanks to his newly given chronokinetic powers.
- He manipulated Blaze the Cat and Silver the Hedgehog, under the form of Shadow, into thinking Sonic was the "Iblis Trigger", stating what would happen if Iblis got unleashed, and thus ordered them to kill him within that period, which was all part of his master plan into unleashing Iblis his way.
- He revealed to Omega that he was using him, and a reasonable purpose for him was to defeat Shadow in the future.
- While he claimed to have a hatred of humanity, he used this to manipulate Shadow, to which Shadow calls him out claiming that he has no desire for revenge and just craves destruction.
- What this also means is that Mephiles is completely unaffected by his backstory of being exploited in the Solaris Project.
- He used the purple Chaos Emerald to blind Sonic and then killing him by impaling the latter, which was his popularly infamous Moral Event Horizon crossing and was the first time a Sonic villain actually succeeded in murdering him, albeit temporarily.
- The death of Sonic caused Elise to cry over him, unleashing Iblis from her body, allowing Mephiles to successfully fuse with him to form Solaris.
- Although he was right about Sonic actually being the Iblis Trigger, his death would not stop Iblis' resurrection like he told Silver but would actually cause it, so this doesn't count as a prevention.
- When he fused with Iblis to form Solaris, he transformed Earth into an endless dimension that would be later devoured by him.
- Even though he could've travelled back in time and easily killed Elise to unleash Iblis, he specifically chose a method that would psychologically torture and torment many both to fulfill his sadistic enjoyment and eliminate any threats to his destruction of reality.
- As Solaris, he:
- Engulfed the Soleanna Castle Town into ashes before transporting Elise and Sonic, along with Sonic's allies and Eggman, to their next location.
- Attempted to destroy all timelines and life in existence without hesitation.
- Despite being evil from the very time he was born as well as being the very embodiment of darkness itself, this does not make him made of evil due to him being the personification of Solaris' mind and will. There's also nothing in the game that ever implies being made of darkness has any effect on moral agency.
- Overall, he stands as one of the most heinous villains that Sonic and his friends have ever faced, as he tried to destroy all times and realities with the only villains that rival him being The End and Dr. Eggman himself.
Trivia[]
- According to Morio Kishimoto, it might be possible for him to return in the future. Ian Flynn even intended on bringing him back due to his popularity. Thus, it's possible that his status might change in the future although this is extremely unlikely due to Flynn's writing style.
