Megatron is the main antagonist of the 2007 animated TV series Transformers: Animated.
He is the ruthless leader of the Decepticons after overthrowing their previous leader, Megazarak, and rallying up support from his minions. He sought to conquer Cybertron, initiating the Great War that led to countless casualties. He eventually suffered a 50-year downfall when fighting a crew of repair bots who found the AllSpark thanks to a bomb planted by his second-in-command, Starscream. He is the archenemy of Optimus Prime, who is one of the only Autobots that Megatron calls by name.
He was voiced by Corey Burton, who also voiced Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Brainiac in the DC Animated Universe, Brainiac 1.0 in Legion of Super Heroes, V.V. Argost in The Secret Saturdays, Zeus in God of War, Silver Cyclone in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the Galalunan Commander in Sym-Bionic Titan and Hugo Strange in Batman: Arkham City.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Ultimately, almost every crime in Transformers: Animated are tied to him and he is generally responsible for the series happening in the first place. This is very heinous as villains like Lockdown, Meltdown, Shockwave, Blackarachnia, Swindle, HeadMaster, Starscream & Soundwave have committed pretty heinous crimes, Megatron's presence itself would be tied to them one way or another.
- Like most versions of Megatron, he is a power-hungry tyrant hell-bent on universal domination and destroying his enemies. However, what makes this version probably more dangerous than the others is his intelligence and being less cartoonish, being able to actively pose a threat to not just Earth, but the entire universe as well, to the point where the entire Autobot High Command were on full alert 24/7, fearing the possibility of his return to Cybertron. While most other incarnations are treated seriously within their stories, they prove to be too impulsive or comedic, while this version remains focused and no-nonsense throughout his run, making him much more terrifying and a deadly serious threat.
- While he is pretty polite to his allies, his politeness is only on words as he only views his soldiers and their loyalty as useful assets for him to use. He would abuse or straight-up murder his Decepticons when they fail him too many times or betray him (like Starscream), belittles Lugnut, his most loyal follower, behind his back and threatens him and Blitzwing several times, and in the tie-in comics, sacrifices hundreds of them with chemical weapons to win battles (by wiping out the entire battlefield itself).
- Despite viewing Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus as worthy enemies since he actually bothers to remember their names, this falls under a shallower category of villainous respect rather than something genuine since doing so provokes genuine rage and contempt out of him.
- While he does claim he is fighting for the freedom of all Decepticons from Autobot tyranny, and the Elite Guard have shown to be strict to straight up ruthless, this is shown to be more and more of an empty rhetoric coincidental to Megatron's own bloodlust, sacrificing any of his soldiers if convenient in the battlefield as revealed in tie-in comics, and blatantly admits the power-hungry side towards him as the reason for not using himself as the template to clone Omega Supreme and his overall endgame is to conquer Cybertron to enforce another autocratic rule. In general, all the time Megatron even talks of bringing freedom is whenever he is manipulating or rallying the Decepticons and nowhere else.
- Shows no care for the Decepticons including Blitzwing, Lugnut (his most loyal folower), Soundwave, and Shockwave, as he only saw them as pawns for his goals. Even though he praised Shockwave for his loyalty, it was for pragmatic reasons since he was so successful in his endeavors.
Background and The Allspark Almanac[]
- He betrayed and dethroned Megazarak, who was the previous and seemingly benevolent leader.
- He started the devastating Great War that caused mass destruction all over Cybertron and heavy number of casualties on both the Autobots' and Decepticons' sides.
- He authorized the use of chemical weapons, having them wipe out entire battlefields and sacrifice nearly all of his Decepticons present (which was hundreds), uncaring of their deaths. It also means he did not care about his fellow Decepticon members, including loyal minions like Shockwave and Lugnut, showing that he only viewed them as pawns for his goals.
- The worst is when he had his forces aerial bomb multiple civilian areas all across Cybertron, killing millions of innocent civilians to force Ultra Magnus into giving him the AllSpark.
Season 1[]
- After his crew located the Autobot ship (which was Omega Supreme), he orders the Decepticons to cripple it but not destroy it yet. After Blackarachnia confirms that the AllSpark is probably on the ship and Starscream volunteers to get it, Megatron grabs his wing, threatening and damaging him in the process.
- He personally attacks Optimus Prime's crew, attempting to kill them and obtain the AllSpark for himself so he could use its energy to destroy the Autobots and conquer Cybertron.
- After realizing that he is trapped as a head, he slowly but surely enacts on his plan to build a new body for himself. This resulted in the creation of the Dinobots, manipulating them into believing that the Autobots seek their extinction.
- He lied to Isaac Sumdac about being an Autobot so he can have his body fixed in order to succeed his goal.
- Took control of the pocketbot made by Professor Sumdac and use it to take control of the machines from the abandoned Sumdac Systems factory and to crush down Optimus Prime and his crew.
- Gives Stilleto a laser scalpel and a metal alloy for a "field test," where she nearly destroyed an entire bridge filled with people in their cars/trucks. Megatron shrugs this off as a successful field test.
- Upon noticing that Soundwave gained his own free will, he tries to inspire him to start a revolution that will see humanity either become slaves to robots or exterminated.
- He killed Starscream for his attempt to usurp him, which Megatron then uses this to threaten Lugnut and Blitzwing's lives and teach them that not pledging loyalty to him is a death sentence.
- Merges with the AllSpark so that he can use its grand power to raze the entire Earth to the ground before using it to conquer Cybertron.
Season 2[]
- Kidnaps Professor Sumdac and threatened him with death to force him into building the Space Bridge. This would even lead to Porter C. Powell gaining the opportunity to take over Sumdac Systems under Professor Sumdac's absence, which forced Sari to move in with Optimus Prime and his crew.
- Upon hearing about Swindle's EMP weapon which could freeze all Autobots, leaving them in a fate worse than going offline as they would still be aware of their surroundings, Megatron expressed an interest in it.
- Had Shockwave cause mass chaos all across the galaxy to distract the Elite Guards through Decepticon Uprisings, which enabled Decepticons all across the galaxy to wage war in various parts of the universe, killing hundreds to thousands of people in the process.
- Threatened Bulkhead to cut off his head with the headmaster unit and force his severed head, which is still alive, to watch as he uses his body to kill all his friends. Unlike most other times when a Headmaster unit chops off a head, which have had some comedic tone to it, this was presented in a more serious and horrifying light.
- During the battle for the Space Bridge, he sarcastically "thanks" Optimus for coming to his rescue, only to use him as a living shield against the Starscreams' laser blasts minutes later.
Season 3[]
- Uses Starscream's head as a living battery to power the Space Bridge and Omega Supreme, causing immense pain to him, so that he can use them both to invade Cybertron.
- Hijacks Omega Supreme's conscious in an attempt to manually transport himself back to Cybertron and use Omega Supreme, the Autobots' infamous sentient weapon of mass destruction, to attack Cybertron and conquer it.
- In the finale, Megatron makes three clones of Omega Supreme and tries to have Detroit annihilated as a test of its powers, wanting to watch the destruction up close and personal, to see how useful they can be to be unleashed upon Cybertron.
- Upon Starscream activating a self-destruct sequence on the clones, Megatron tries to drag Optimus Prime down with him after realizing he can't escape.
- After barely surviving the explosion, he once again attacks Optimus with the intent of killing him before being defeated by the Autobot commander.
- When faced at Optimus' mercy, he tries to goade Optimus to stoop down his level of ruthlessly executing bested and defenseless enemies. However, Optimus remained firm on his ideals and spared him, knowing it will only be more fitting for Megatron to instead be sentenced to whatever a court deems fit for his crimes.
Trivia[]
- Original ideas for Season 4 involved Megatron becoming much viler when he becomes even more powerful by upgrading himself into a Triple-Changer (the same process that caused Blitzwing to have three personalities), as he would turn insane and flat out attempt to roboticize the Earth, thus forcing the Decepticons to join the Autobots to stop him.
- It should be noted, however, that the idea above was a Hasbro mandate in order to have synergy with the live-action movies, as prior to this, the original idea for Season 4 involved the Autobots having to deal with Blackarachnia (who now embraces her organic side because of Meltdown's torture and would create a Predacon army), while an imprisoned Megatron would manipulate Sentinel ala-Hannibal Lecter to help him win the election against Optimus to become Magnus just so he could escape prison and conquer Cybertron. Either way considering he was always an evil power-hungry psychopath, Megatron would still have agency to count as pure evil.
- It is mentioned in the Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II that it was implied by Cyclonus in the future that Megatron would be rebuilt as Galvatron and kills Oil Slick. If confirmed to be true it would make Megatron even worse.
- In the Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II an unmade episode of Season 3 the Autobots would've been transported into the future where Megatron now Galvatron is would ally with the Autobots with him leading a rebellion against Blackarachnia's Predacons. If the episode been made his PE status would've been challenged as if his intentions of allying with the Autobots are not pragmatic and are genuine he would end up being demoted to NPE or IH depending on how it plays out.
