“ | And you, who have failed me... I leave you to fulfill your destiny! | „ |
~ Masashi Kyojo dealing with those recruits who "fail" him. |
General Masashi Kyojo is the main antagonist of the 1993-1994 comic book miniseries Indiana Jones: Thunder in the Orient, the second Indiana Jones comic series published by Dark Horse Comics.
He is a ruthless general from the Imperial Japan in the years leading up to World War II. In 1938, Kyojo discovers about the Covenant of Buddha's existence, leading him to pursue the recovery of the Covenant to let his country conquer Asia.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Tricks the South African archaeologist Theo Van Aaken about giving him a porcentage of the potential treasure hidden inside the Temple of the Covenant of Buddha only to then shoot him fatally in the neck. Even if Van Aaken wasn't a saint, he didn't deserve to be killed especially because if it wasn't for him, Kyojo wouldn't have been aware of the Covenant's existence.
- Wishes to gain possession of the Covenant of Buddha to become the next messiah, force all of Asia's Buddhists to kneel before Japan and let themselves be conquered.
- Has his men attacks the bandits who ambushed the train used by Indiana Jones and his party just to "announce" his presence, having been tipped off thanks to a Sherpa spy behind some of Dr. Patar Kali's men, leading Kyojo and his forces to slaughter almost all of them and not even saving their spy from being taken prisoner by the survivors.
- Sends Sergeant Itaki and some soldiers to kill Indiana Jones as he explores the Colossus of Bamian, leading to the gruesome deaths of several of Jones' guards and to Itaki nearly killing Jones. In the last moment, Kyojo realizes that Indy can still be useful, so rather than calling Itaki off, Kyojo has a sniper shoot him dead. Thus, Kyojo's reasons to spare Indy rely more on pragmatism than genuine sympathy.
- Forces his three Sanskrit experts to commit "Hara-Kiri" for failing to find the clues inside Gautama Buddha's ancient writings that Jones was able to decipher.
- Ambushes the Serpent Lady and her rebels as they take Indiana Jones to Szechuan, China in a ravine's bridge, having his troops firing at her men unless they surrender Indiana Jones.
- Though he does offer the Serpent Lady and her men to surrender Indy, there are no indications that Kyojo would have kept his word on sparing the Chinese rebels or not.
- Discretly leaves two snipers behind at the ravine to shoot at any one minus Indy that tries to cross the bridge, resulting in the death of one of the Serpent Lady's men.
- Shows no remorse as the Serpent Lady and her rebels bury alive his troops with giant rocks.
- Attempts to ambush Indy's party at the Hankow, Nanking train station with Colonel Watanabe.
- Orders the airbombing of the village in which Ch'ao the Red is holding Indy's party as his hostages. Though Ch'ao and his men were bad people, they weren't even given a chance to fight back.
- It should also be noted that due to how big the village is, possibility are that there were some innocents living by there and they were all killed by Kyojo's projectiles.
- Has two soldiers try to blow Indy and his party up with an armored car.
- Tries to murder Indiana Jones with his gun, viciously beats him up and tries to behead him with his ceremonial katana, even taunting him that his Western head will be merely the first, implying at potential genocidal intentions at America.
- Even in spite of all the atrocities he had done, Indy still tried to save him as he laid unconscious on the floor, only leaving him there once Indy realizes that if he stops too long, he is gonna die crushed like Kyojo.
- Although he claims that what he does is for the glory of the Japanese Empire and that he and his Emperor thank Jones for leading them into the Covenant of Buddha, he claims that only he will be the "next messiah" and everyone will only kneel before him, hinting that he doesn't really care for his Emperor, and had he gotten the Covenant, he would have likely overthrown his Emperor given the chance.
