| “ | Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children, only dolls. If you see her in your dreams, be sure you never, ever scream or she'll rip your tongue out at the seam. | „ |
| ~ A nursery rhyme about Mary Shaw and her "children". |
| “ | Now, who's the dummy?! | „ |
| ~ Mary Shaw's most famous quote. |
Mary Shaw is the main antagonist of the 2007 Supernatural horror film Dead Silence. She is an undead ventriloquist with a spirit of vengeance who seeks to kill those who aided in initially killing her and taking away her voice.
She was portrayed by Judith Roberts.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
- Even though she never throughout her life had any friends nor established any form of meaningful connection with others, there is nothing that implies it hinders social ability, meaning she has moral agency.
- Although she did not start out as an utterly vile person, she nonetheless had adverse personality traits even before her complete descent into evil. For instance, she displayed extensive pride in her talent to the point she would argue with others, such as calling Michael Ashen a "dummy" after proving her point.
- Michael was also horrified by Mary's demonstration of her doll's ability to not only speak independent of her, but also as two separate voices at the same time.
- Kidnaped and murdered Michael Ashen. Especially when she is revealed to have turned his corpse into a doll, this also makes her initial demise even more well-deserved when the local townsfolk learn of the former.
- Over the course of decades, her vengeful spirit killed numerous people throughout Ravens Fair (this involves the massacre of entire families.) through visions as well as her dolls. She is also revealed to kill people the same way she was first killed: by cutting out their tongues.
- Created and possessed a host she called "Ella Ashen" to get revenge on all the people who aided in killing her by murdering them and their families.
- Although she seemed kind, peaceful, and affectionate while portraying Ella Ashen, this is merely a ruse to hide Mary's true identity and temperament.
- Through Ella, she murdered Edward Ashen and proceeds to use his corpse as a human ventriloquist dummy.
- She murdered Jamie Ashen's wife, Lisa, using one of her puppets. This not only damaged Jamie emotionally, but it also made him a suspect in his wife's death.
- While she didn't kill Jamie Ashen right away, it wasn't out of compassion; she allowed him to live so she could torment him later, with nightmares and visions, while he was busy trying to uncover the truth about Lisa's death.
- Lured in and murders Henry Walker with the voice of his wife Marion. This also well implies she likewise killed her and used her body as a ventriloquist puppet.
- When Jamie finally finds Michael's body and Mary's puppets, and Jamie confronted Mary about why she killed Lisa while leaving him alive, Mary sadistically admitted that she killed Lisa because she knew Lisa was pregnant with Jamie's unborn child. Making such deed particularly atrocious is because Jamie's unborn child was not to blame for Mary's murder, and Mary committed it solely out of spite for the Ashen family and to cause Jamie immense suffering merely for enjoyment.
- After that revelation, she cruelly laughed at Jamie and attempted to kill him and Detective Jim Lipton, managing to kill Detective Lipton.
- Left Jamie's father dead for him to find his body.
- Repeating her previous cruel remark to Michael by asking Jamie "Now, who's the dummy?", she killed him and transformed him into a human doll alongside his dad. Granted she succeeded in her goals and felt no remorse for her crimes, it is a firm conclusion that she would continue to murder people, inclusive of innocents.
- Although she has some faint comedic lines, they are never separate from her cruelty, more often than not emphasizing it.
- Although she is fond of her dolls and has a large collection of them to symbolize her passion, there is nothing that suggests she ultimately saw them as any more than pawns for her own ends. This is further suggested by her lack of immediate concern for them getting burned, despite being aware of their conscious suffering.
