Mary Lou Maloney is a major antagonist in the Prom Night film series, serving as the main antagonist of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II and Prom Night III: The Last Kiss.

She is the sadistic, vengeful ghost of a high school girl who burned to death in a prank gone horribly wrong on her prom night, who resurfaces 30 years later to torment the student body.

She was portrayed by Lisa Schrage in Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II and by Courtney Taylor in Prom Night III: The Last Kiss.

What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]

General/Background[]

  • She shows no genuine care towards any of her boyfriends:
    • She never cared for Billy Nordham, even prior to her death, given that she cheated on him and even admitted that she was just using him to be popular, showing no concern for his feelings. Even when he posthumously crowned her prom queen as his apology for accidentally causing her death, she rejects his offer of redemption anyway and possesses him (with the implication that she caused his death by the next film given that he never appears again).
    • Much like Billy, she simply cheated with Buddy Cooper to use him for her own gain, and killed him despite him having no involvement in her death.
    • While she did assist Alex Gray in his school life with his grades and football skills at first, it was only to manipulate him into trusting her out of her lustful obsession with him, as she had sex with him in every encounter they had (with it being described as a "sexual haunting" in a book he reads). Regardless, she killed his loved ones and trapped him in a fate worse than death for breaking it off with her, subverting any possible care she may have had for him.
  • Despite her horrific death on her prom night, this does not make her tragic nor excuse any of her horrendous actions for the following reasons:
    • She was unpleasant even before her death, having always cheated on and used boys to get what she wanted.
    • Most of the people she killed had absolutely nothing to do with her death and she especially expressed sadistic pleasure in killing them. Most notably, she got her "revenge" on Billy by the end of the movie and by the next instalment, she's still tormenting and killing people years later who played no part in her death, showing that she has moved far past her tragedy.
    • The narrative itself does not portray her with any sympathy in any way and makes it clear that she's a sadistic, egotistical psychopath who uses other people for her own gain and will waste no time in happily slaughtering anyone who angers or wrongs her.
  • She easily passes the Heinous Standards of the series by having the highest kill count and no redeeming qualities, as well as having the highest resources of any villain in the series and making the most out of them especially with how she kills each person in a unique manner.
  • While the third movie is a horror comedy/spoof, her crimes are still played completely seriously.
  • She gets away with all of her horrific crimes by the end of both movies, having successfully killed practically everyone in both movies who opposed her, making her a huge Karma Houdini.

Prom Night II[]

  • Upon her spirit being accidentally unleashed by Vicki, she kills her friend Jess Browning via hanging her just because she took a jewel out of her crown, made even worse by the fact that she was pregnant, meaning she killed her unborn child too with no remorse.
  • She psychologically torments Vicki with nightmares and hallucinations, culminating in her causing Vicki to slap her rival Kelly Hennenlotter and get sent to detention, where she finally possesses her by pulling her through a chalkboard.
  • Stabs Buddy to death with a crucifix and places his corpse in her grave even though he had nothing to do with her trauma.
  • Telekinetically crushes Vicki's friend Monica Waters to death with lockers when she notices Vicki's change in personality and fashion.
  • She seduces Vicki's father in her body, even kissing him. When Vicki's mother finds them, she kills her by launching her through the front door of their house.
  • Electrocutes Josh to death with his computer just for changing the votes to make Kelly the Prom Queen.
  • She wrecks havoc on the prom after being shot by Billy and bursting from Vicki's body, killing Kelly by impaling her through the stomach with neon lights.
  • Attempts to drag Billy's son Craig to the underworld, before Billy seemingly puts her at rest by giving her the prom crown, only for her to then possess Billy. She then makes him wear her ring and drive off with a horrified Vicki and Craig. It is implied that she most likely killed all three of them, given that by the next movie, she's seen condemned to Hell for her crimes and escaping, in addition to the school having a new principal replacing Billy.

Prom Night III[]

  • Upon escaping from Hell, she kills school janitor and former boyfriend Jack Roswell via electrocuting him with a jukebox to the point where his pacemaker bursts out of his chest, once again brutally killing someone who had nothing to do with her demise seemingly out of pettiness.
  • She wrecks havoc in the gym once more to make her presence known by blowing strong winds.
  • Kills Alex's biology teacher for giving him a bad grade and forces him to bury his body.
  • Burns Alex's guidance counsellor Ms. Richards to death with battery acid when she becomes suspicious of his high grades, once again forcing him to bury her body.
  • Impales Alex's rival Andrew on a football post with a spinning football acting like a drill, which finally convinces Alex to break things off with her.
  • In retaliation, she frames Alex for her brutal murder of Shane Taylor by ripping out his heart after he tells him about her, resulting in him being seen as a murderer by his parents when he returned home to protect them after Mary Lou threatened to kill them and send him to jail, where she also kills two police officers by electrocution and leaves to kill his love interest Sarah Monroe after he turns her down once again.
  • Kills Sarah's prom date Leonard Walsh by wrapping him in magnetic tape.
  • Attempts to kill Sarah on stage, forcing Alex to willingly go to Hell with Mary Lou in exchange for her life.
  • She attacks Sarah in Hell with a jukebox that fires buzzsaw blades and almost kills Alex to make him her Prom King for eternity.
  • She returns one final time to brutally kill Sarah by driving her hand through her back, driving Alex insane as he's trapped in the 1950s in a time loop where no one can see or hear him, in a fate worse than death, making him admit that she's won.

Trivia[]

  • She, alongside Richard Fenton, are the only two Prom Night villains to be Pure Evil.
