~ Marlo to a security guard after getting deliberately caught shoplifting.
What the f-ck you know about what I need on my mind, motherf-cker? My name was on the street? When we bounce from this sh-t here, y'all going to go down on them corners and let the people know: Word did not get back to me. Let them know Marlo step to ANY motherf-cker -- Omar, Barksdale, whoever. MY NAME IS MY NAME!
~ Marlo Stanfield displaying his conceited nature.

Marlo Stanfield, also known as Black, is one of the three main antagonists (alongside Avon Barksdale and Russell "Stringer" Bell) of the HBO series The Wire.

He is portrayed by Jamie Hector.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He recruits kids as young as twelve or thirteen to be assassins for his gang.
  • He appears to have a close relationship with Chris and Snoop (particularly Chris) but it’s evident that he doesn’t care about them given that he shows no concern when Snoop dies or Chris is sent to prison.
  • His pigeons are just a hobby rather than actual pets and he views them as objects. It also indicates how detached he is from humanity.

Season 3[]

  • He starts a bloody gang war with the Barksdales because he views their offer to join their coalition as disrespectful to him.
  • When one of his underlings has Bubbles at gunpoint, Marlo tells him that he can kill Bubbles if he wants to.
  • He personally kills a woman who Avon sent to spy on him.

Season 4[]

  • He has Chris and Snoop take people into vacant houses, kill them, cover the bodies in quicklime to dissolve them faster, and then board the vacants back up. When the police figure out this strategy, they uncover a total of twenty-two bodies in the vacants
  • He gives the boys in Bodie’s crew money for school clothes to buy their loyalty away from Bodie and tempt them by showing the money that can be earned in his organization rather than out of the kindness of his heart.
  • He shoplifts a lollipop from a food mart, and when a security guard confronts him over this, Marlo asks him if he knows who he has. The guard says that he knows who Marlo is, but that he isn’t going to let Marlo walk all over him. Marlo has him killed for “talking back.”
  • He has Chris kill a random delivery woman so that Old-Face Andre can claim Omar did it.
  • He tries to have Omar killed in jail.
  • He has Old-Face Andre killed for backing up on his false accusation of Omar and trying to leave Baltimore behind his back.
  • He has Little Kevin killed on the mere suspicion that he is working with the police.
  • He exposes Randy for being a snitch, which leads to Randy's house being firebombed and Randy facing abuse by the other boys in the group home he is sent to.

Season 5[]

  • He has Junebug and his entire immediate family, including young kids, killed simply because Junebug spread a rumor that Marlo is gay when it would have been more reasonable for him to simply tell Junebug that he's straight.
  • He has Chris and Snoop torture Butchie by shooting out his kneecaps and then in the crotch before finally killing him once they give up on getting information out of Butchie. They leave one of Butchie’s associates alive so he’ll report the incident to Omar, provoking Omar to return to Baltimore for revenge so Marlo can kill him.
  • He kills his mentor, Proposition Joe, so that he can take over Joe’s supply connection with The Greek. Joe may have set Omar on him, but Marlo doesn’t know that; he kills Joe simply because he is of no further use to him.
  • He has Hungry Man killed behind the Co-Op’s back so that Cheese can take his territory.
  • He orders Michael Lee’s death without hesitation when he gets the vague (and incorrect) notion that Michael snitched on him, throwing any respect he had for Michael right out the window.
  • Becoming a legitimate businessman, which would be a happy ending for most characters, is a defeat for Marlo due to how bloodthirsty he is.

Trivia[]

  • Marlo is one of two Pure Evil villains in The Wire, the other being Sam Choksey.
