NOTE: This article is only on account of the book version of Malkariss as the TV Show version was not voted Pure Evil.

Malkariss is the overarching antagonist of the book Mattimeo, the third book within the Redwall novel series. He is the ruler of an underground kingdom with a large army of rats willing to serve him and having employees who would kidnap many children across the lands for him and subject them to endless slavery within the kingdom where they would be forced to do all sorts of hard labor within, his main employee in this case being Slagar the Cruel, who would routinely deliver slaves for him. He has a large statue built for himself to speak through to whoever and hides himself in a large basket to compensate for the fact that he is a frail old polecat in reality.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He had estimately hundreds of young children be kidnapped across the land, brought to his underground lair, and enslaved into doing hard labor for the rest of their lives, said hard labor consisting of dragging boulders, cutting and dressing stones into square and oblong blocks, mixing mortar and cement, hauling huge blocks of stone on towropes, lifting stone blocks into position with pulleys and tackles, laying mortar and limestone cement in the gaps that were to receive the stones, etc. everyday while being whipped by his servants, becoming painfully thin since they would often be starved, and covered in rockdust in order to build his own kingdom.
    • What makes this worse is that the slavery is conveyed to have caused deaths amongst the children enslaved, with Nadaz reporting to him that 4 more children have died of late due to the labor and that they'll need more strong woodland creatures to serve as workers for many seasons, showing that this has happened before and the text later on specifying that sometimes a child would cry out and fall over exhausted, being beaten by the rats until he or she either got up or lay permanently still.
  • After Slagar brings him a group of more young slaves, some whom he kidnapped from Redwall, some whom he kidnapped elsewhere, when informed by Slagar of Vitch, whom Malkariss asked on who he is, that he is a gift to serve in the ranks of the host, Malkariss instead has Vitch be chained to the other slaves since he is not born to the host.
  • He then orders the new slaves brought to be kept in darkness without food until he decides they are fit to work since they have known freedom in the woodlands.
  • After having Slagar be taken to a chamber below and watched while he makes up his mind on whether or not he'll give all the land above ground to him as part of their deal, he has the slaves he imprisoned brought to his statue where he prepares to subject them to slavery along with the other children. However, he instead winds up ordering all of them to be taken back and locked away without light, food, or water, declaring that they're not ready to serve him yet with Nadaz doing just that after one of the children, Tess, declares that while they can chain her next to anyone, she will not build an underground kingdom for a statue.
  • Malkariss has Nadaz bring Slagar before his statue, having made his decision, and tells him to tell Slagar that he is to be given fourscore rats and left to carry out his commands in the territory above his kingdom and that if he plays him false, he will be slain though if he remains loyal to his bidding for some time, he will increase his command by ten times and set his slaves to build him a stone fortress above ground for him to rule all the territory from the cliffs to the south hitherlands.
  • When Matthias and his friends came in to rescue the children and proceed to fight the servants as Nadaz and Slagar run to the statue with Nadaz alerting Malkariss of their presence, angered at this, Malkaris condemns Slagar, telling him that he will deal with him later before ordering Nadaz to tell his fighters to surround the statue and to throw the whole weight of his host against the intruders. Nadaz carries out this command and a large battle ensues between the woodlanders and Nadaz' massive forces, a battle that would mostly reign victorious on the woodlanders' end albeit with some losing their lives.
  • After Matthias falls onto the large basket Malkariss was in which was lowered down below ground on a rope by the horde of rats and Malkariss comes out, revealing his true form, Malkariss attempts to kill Matthias with the sword he dropped, declaring that now that he has seen his true form, he must die only for the children he enslaved to rise up against him and save Matthias by tossing so many big rocks at him that he gets buried underneath a pile of them, being stoned to death and his slavery of them being put to an end once and for all.
  • Despite Redwall's heinous standard, Malkariss stands out for being the most prolific in the act of child slavery with him having subjected hundreds of creatures to doing all sorts of hard labor for his underground kingdom, the victims consisting purely of children, with the labor itself being conveyed to have caused many of them to die.
  • While he does tell Nadaz to tell Slagar that he intends on giving him fourscore rats and left to carry out his commands in the territory above his kingdom and will increase his command by ten times and set his slaves to build him a stone fortress above ground to rule all the territory from the cliffs to the south hitherlands as part of the deal they made in exchange for the slaves Slagar brought for him, it's likely that this was out of pragmatism to keep Slagar as his employee and it's not made clear if he actually intended on honoring the deal or not.

Trivia[]

  • Only the book version of Malkariss qualifies as Pure Evil as his TV Show counterpart doesn’t explicitly work his victims to death, and despite the slavery still being awful in the show, he still fails the heinous standard there due to this despite it being overall lower than the books.
