Burn the old! Flay the young! Bring me the eyes of all who refuse to see!
~ Malekith, ordering his minions to kill fellow Dark Elves.
The sword, Twilight, is finished. The hosts are ready. And when he strikes the third blow against the power of Asgard, then shall the Nine Worlds shake as never before!
~ Malekith, preparing for Surtur.

Malekith the Accursed also known as the Master of the Hounds, is a Dark Elf from the realm of Svartalfheim and one of Thor's most dangerous enemies. He is a powerful sorcerer and controls a pack of supernatural wolves. Half of his body is black, while the other half is bluish-white. In 2012, he was revived in the Thor: God of Thunder series as the main villain of Thor Vol. 4, and he later became the main antagonist of the War on the Realms event.

He is the ruler of the Dark Elves (who are the dark counterpart of their sworn enemies, the Light Elves), who are also known as the Faerie of Celtic mythology and of Arthurian legend.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Although he had a traumatic childhood where he lost his father, 12 brothers, and 12 uncles in battle, got sold into slavery by his own mother for dog food, and was forced to work as a corpse-burner (some of the 3,000 bodies he burned hadn't even finished dying yet), it's made clear that he loves war too much to change, angrily murdering his mage teacher in cold blood just for offering to help him finally grant Svartalfheim peace after the personal tragedies Malekith faced in his youth. His defeat of being forced to watch his child self live a happy life on a monitor for the rest of eternity in Hel, while brutal, is played for catharsis rather than sympathy.
  • Overall, he is a feared and hated tyrant, even amongst his fellow Dark Elves, and for good reason. In one instance (Thor Vol. 5 #13), he put countless children under forced labor in the mushroom mines. In another instance (Mighty Thor: At the Gates of Valhalla), he told a village of starving peasants to eat each other, laughing as it happened.
  • He leads a pack of ravenous hounds trained to devour their enemies. Even worse, it's said that in their current state, the dogs sometimes eat their own mothers.
    • In order to gain control over said hounds in the first place, Malekith fed them his mother and their then-owner, Lady Mazerot.
  • He claims to have been kidnapping and eating unwanted mortal children on Earth for thousands of years as a sport, replacing them with changeling spies.
  • He eats the souls of virtuous mortals, one such example being Eric Willis.
  • In The Surtur Saga, he opens the Casket of Ancient Winters to plunge Earth into a new ice age while also freeing his master Surtur—an omnicidal Fire Demon—from Muspelheim to bring forth Ragnarök, thus jeopardizing all the Nine Realms.
    • During the same story, Malekith drops one of his own men, Algrim the Strong, into a pitfall with lava at the bottom, thus causing Algrim's transformation into Kurse.
  • In the Accursed story arc, upon being freed from Niffleheim, he waged a genocidal crusade on his own people in hopes that he'd be appointed Svartalfheim's king once more, slaughtering entire villages of Dark Elves with his hounds, as well as ordering his men to "burn the old, flay the young, and bring me the eyes of all who refuse to see." He even kills Queen Alflyse and cuts off Waziria's arm just for the hell of it.
  • He cuts off Thor's arm, again just for the hell of it.
  • In War of the Realms, he begins a bloody, destructive conquest of both Asgard and Earth, killing countless people on both sides, including Valkyrie.
