At long last, my guests have arrived. Please come in. Such determination to get here. It seems we share other qualities besides that of our color.
~ Malefor meeting Spyro.

Malefor, also known as The Dark Master, is the main antagonist of The Legend of Spyro video game trilogy, serving as the unseen overarching antagonist of both A New Beginning and The Eternal Night and the main antagonist of Dawn of the Dragon.

He is a corrupted Purple Dragon who harbors a twisted belief that the world must be annihilated and rebuilt according to his own design. Throughout the trilogy, the story gradually takes on a darker tone, with higher stakes involved. Malefor serves as a stark contrast to Spyro, embodying everything that the heroic dragon is not. This conflict between good and evil is depicted as the most intense and consequential in the entire franchise. Ultimately, Malefor becomes the reigning monarch of evil, confined to a nightmarish realm. Upon his release, he nearly succeeds in obliterating the world, but is ultimately defeated for good by the valiant efforts of Spyro and Cynder. Malefor is skillfully presented as Spyro's ultimate adversary, representing pure malevolence and acting as his arch-nemesis.

He was voiced by Mark Hamill, who also played the Trickster in the 1990 The Flash show and the 2014 The Flash show, the Joker in the DC Animated Universe and the Arkham games, the alternate Hobgoblin in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Colonel Muska in Castle in the Sky, Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Maltruant in Ben 10: Omniverse.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Malefor abused his gifts by using Dark Aether, a power that he was aware could corrupt him into becoming a dangerous individual.
  • He murdered most of the dragons he grew up with and gave Gaul the order to kill baby dragons.
  • He destroyed Cynder's innocence and made her go through internal struggles in resisting evil temptations.
  • He ruined Gaul's ape army by turning them into undead wretched creatures by failing to kill Spyro, despite the fact that they sacrificed a lot and risked their lives to free Malefor from his imprisonment.
  • He tried to corrupt Cynder once more and get her to attack Spyro.
  • He attempted to destroy the world to recreate it in accordance with his own vision and likely murdered millions in doing so by tearing the planet apart.
  • Regardless of him once being good or having a strictly evil mind, it was all his decision to shed those redeeming qualities by willingly delving into the Dark Aether, meaning his lack of moral agency cannot be applicable because he chose to be that way.
