I'm the only person in this world who understands the composition of souls. After all, I change the shape of other creatures by making contact with them. All emotions are the result of the soul's metabolism. They're far to mechanical to call hearts. People place too much value on things they can't see. I can see them, and souls are no more special than Physical bodies. They're just there. Do you get it? There's no value or importance to life. Life just continues its cycle, same as the waters of the world. That's true for both you and me. Our lives are meaningless and have no value. And that's why we can do anything we want. We're free to live our lives however we please. You can't let yourself get trapped in an ideal of indifference. There's no need for consistency in how you live your life. Just as you eat when you get hungry, you can kill someone if you hate them. I'll sanction you fully.
~ Mahito encouraging Junpei into misanthropy.
I bet you thought... You were gonna do some pest control! Or exterminate ghosts like some make-believe story! You came to Shibuya with half-assed determination, didn't ya?! How naïve, you stupid brat! This is war! Not a battle to fix what's wrong! But a clash of truths! You and your fragile justice! You are me, Yuji Itadori! I kill without a second thought... Just like how you save people without a second thought! The instincts of a curse... Against the so-called dignity of obtained human reason! It's a battle to determine who will be left standing in 100 years! How the hell did you think you were gonna beat me... When you don't even realize that? Tell me, Yuji Itadori... Have you ever stopped to think about how many curses you've killed? No, right? Me neither, me neither. Like I care about how many people I've killed... I'm sure I'll eventually forget about you too!
~ Mahito to Yuji Itadori after physiologically breaking him

Mahito (真人 Mahito) is the secondary antagonist of the supernatural action manga/anime series Jujutsu Kaisen. He is a Disaster Cursed Spirit who is allied with Kenjaku, aka Suguru Geto, to replace humanity with Cursed Spirits in their entire population to eradicate them.

He is one of the two arch-enemies of Yuji Itadori (alongside Ryomen Sukuna) after killing his friend Junpei Yoshino, with Mahito making it a personal mission to break the boy's spirit before killing him.

He is voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki, who also voiced Joffrey Baratheon in the Japanese dub of Game of Thrones, Tooru in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle R, and Lucien Dodge in the English version.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He has experimented on numerous people by using his shapeshifting to manipulate their souls into monsters or weapons for him to use.
    • Some victims die in agony from the transformation alone, and the rest are left in constant pain with awareness of what they are being forced to do and cry out for help, leaving them with fates worse than death.
  • Just like rest of the Disaster Cursed Spirits, Mahito wishes to eradicate all of humanity and have them replaced with Cursed Spirits roaming around the world. However, unlike his companions, Mahito's desire of eradicating humanity is more so entirely out of killing for pleasure and satisfaction rather than for the sake of a better world for Cursed Spirits.
  • Despite being the embodiment of human malice, Mahito is a Cursed Spirit who knows full well that he's evil and loves every moment of it. It is also explicitly pointed out that Special Grade Cursed Spirits are capable of having intelligence and their own personalities.
    • While all curses are shown to have instinctual desires to hurt people and enjoy it, they can still develop redeeming qualities (such as Jogo and Hanami's concern for their comrades). This proves that Mahito is consciously choosing to be a completely irredeemable monster.
  • While he is extremely comedic and hammy, this is only when he isn’t committing atrocities. Whenever Mahito goes out of his way to commit vile atrocities, with many major characters lost to his hand, they are always taken seriously with Junpei's death being one of the biggest wham scenes in the series that has forever impacted Yuji.
  • Although he claimed that he was proud to be part of Kenjaku's group, which showed some hint of care for his comrades, this was later revealed to be ingenuine, as Mahito was practically disloyal to them and never showed any genuine concern for the deaths of Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon. He was only surprised to hear about Hanami's death instead of mourning them, acts spiteful towards Jogo, and no longer has the interest of recruiting Sukuna, going against their true objective. Therefore, Mahito's care for his fellow allies was only out of mutual professionalism and having the same interests in eradicating humanity instead of genuine comradery.
  • Although his rap sheet isn't as big as Kenjaku's and Sukuna's due to how they've been committing crimes for thousands of years unlike Mahito who is very young compared to them, Mahito is in a league of his own with how he uses his unique abilities to kill innocent people and how his relationship with the main protagonist, Yuji Itadori, makes him stand out compared to other villains in the series as his actions had more impact on Yuji as a character and on a personal level, even more so than Sukuna himself, who killed thousands in Shibuya using his body and Kenjaku, who sealed his teacher Satoru Gojo and orchestrated the Shibuya Incident, as him killing people with Idle Transfiguration made Yuji question his ideals, killed off two people he cared about (Junpei and Nanami) and left one of his best friends (Nobara) in a near death state, and also making Yuji's animosity with Sukuna more personal as he inadvertently allowed Kenjaku to start the Culling Games, which in turn led to Sukuna making Megumi his new vessel, grievously injuring Hana, as well as killing Megumi's sister Tsumiki.

Series[]

  • He has manipulated and placed a binding vow on Kokichi Muta, who is the Ultimate Mechamaru, to use him as a proxy to gain information within the Jujutsu High Academy.
  • Killed one of Junpei's bullies within the cinema, but he didn't do it for Junpei but to make it easier for him to corrupt him.
  • He manipulated Junpei while "befriending" him as he taught him how to use his Curse abilities and encouraged him to kill everyone he hated, as all life is meaningless anyway.
  • Wounded Nanami during his battle with him while also attempting to kill and mutilate him.
  • Orchestrated the death of Junpei's mother, Nagi, on the very night Junpei became friends with Yuji, using one of Sukuna's Fingers to attract a curse to kill her.
    • This pushes Junpei's stress and thoughts to the point where Mahito coerces him to use his powers for revenge against his bullies, whom Mahito framed for the crime.
  • Uses the veil to assist Junpei in getting his "revenge" against his classmates, most notably Shota Ito, within the school area.
  • When Yuji offered Junpei to join him and have a better path for his life as a Jujutsu Sorcerer rather than a Curse User, he intervened by impaling Yuji and forcibly transforming Junpei into a deformed creature, where he died from the process of Idle Transfiguration.
  • He threatens to kill every student around Junpei's school just to further drive Yuji into his despair.
  • Tried to force Yuji to switch into Sukuna in their fight and get the latter to join him and Geto's group, but backfires when it enrages Sukuna and tells him he won't be given another chance.
  • He used three transfigured humans to distract Yuji in a fight. It was implied that some of the transfigured humans he released used to be children, given their dialogue.
  • He stole Death Painting Wombs after attacking Jujutsu High.
    • He also force feeds three humans to incarnate Yuji's older half-brothers: Choso, Eso, and Kechizu, effectively killing the humans.
  • While he did repair Kokichi Muta's body, he only did so because they had made a binding vow and him not fulfilling his end of the vow would have yielded horrific consequences. This is further negated as he kills Muta shortly after despite him being a source of information for Kenjaku’s plans simply because he found him annoying.
  • Transfigured a thousand innocent humans in Shibuya throughout several train stations and had some of the transfigured humans attack or kill more innocent people when he arrived at Shibuya Station.
  • Alongside Choso, killed many humans that they dropped into the subway.
  • Helped assist Kenjaku in sealing Satoru Gojo away using the Prison Realm, thus allowing them to proceed with their plan.
  • He immediately plans to kill Yuji (and Sukuna alongside him), thus fully planning to invalidate Hanami's sacrifice, which was only done to ally with Sukuna.
  • Killed Kento Nanami in front of Yuji by blowing him up with Idle Transfiguration, and when an angry Yuji asked why he does this to people, Mahito just mocked him by mimicking his angry voice and turning his hand into a puppet of Junpei to toy with him further.
  • Tried to corrupt Yuji Itadori in Shibuya in nearly the same way he corrupted Junpei, dismissing idealism and kindness as worthless qualities, in order to drive Yuji into suicidal despair.
  • Used and transfigured random humans he encountered to create weapons/minions in order to fight back against Yuji, playing on his guilt over killing transfigured humans.
  • He and his double let Nobara Kugisaki's guard down for the chance to transfigure her face and have left eye and part of her head explode, temporarily killing her right in front of Yuji, who believed for a long while she was dead. This caused Yuji to lose the will to fight due to losing one of his best friends and was the final nail n the coffin to break his spirit.
  • He beats a mentally broken Yuji while mocking his idealism and beliefs and saying that they are the same, all to further shake his ideals, then attempts to kill him while callously stating he would eventually forget he ever killed Itadori.
  • He transfigures Aoi Todo, starting from his left hand and had he not severed it, Mahito would have killed him, doing so also made him unable to use his Boogie Woogie Technique.
  • In the first light novel based on the series, Mahito became fond of a blind elderly man who he met while looking for a base for him and his fellow curses to use.
    • This stemmed from his curiosity rather than growing to care for him as an individual, and he planned to use his soul to enhance his power because he believed he was a "special" kind of human due to his ability to not show any emotions.
      • When the elderly man died and thanked Mahito for spending time with him, while he was initially shocked and silent, this stemmed from realizing that he was wrong about the man being different from any other human, later referring to his body as an object for him to dispose of, and thinking about how it no longer had a soul he could manipulate.
  • Although he receives an extremely painful and rather disturbing death by being absorbed by Kenjaku, this is never played for sympathy as he deserves this fate.
  • Even in the afterlife, he showed no interest in redemption or change, even irritatingly telling Sukuna that choosing a different path to walk on and excepting his defeat is boring and that he's gone soft showing that even in death, Mahito is still an irredeemable villain.

Trivia[]

  • He and Kenjaku are the first two villains in Jujutsu Kaisen to be counted as Pure Evil.
