Mid-World was reduced to an irradiated wasteland. How Maerlyn laughed!
~ The Gunslinger Born's texts about Maerlyn when he unleashed Todash monsters to cause chaos on Mid-World

Maerlyn is one the overarching antagonists (alongside the Crimson King) of the Dark Tower series. He is an evil demon wizard of the Prim that seeks to cause havoc and chaos, and destroy the Dark Tower to bring the Prim back once more. He is the arch-nemesis of Gan.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • After failing to mischievously humiliate Gan and the Dark Tower with the Laughing Mirror after it shattered to pieces, Maerlyn had his servant turn into a tornado that flew the shards at the Dark Tower, intending to destroy it and every world.
    • While he failed to destroy the Dark Tower, the shards of the Laughing Mirror contained evil energy, that infected the Tower and spread throughout the multiverse, making Maerlyn responsible for every bad thing that happened in the multiverse. While Maerlyn didn't intend this to be the case at first, he had no regrets for what he had done.
  • Deceived the people of Mid-World into creating deadly magical superweapons, called Dogans.
  • Had the people of Mid-World misuse the Dogans, making the Dark Tower crack and leak out foul, Todash creatures that caused mass genocide, chaos, and destruction, all the while Maerlyn laughed.
    • Though Maerlyn once again failed to destroy the Dark Tower, he still was responsible for many deaths.
  • Summoned the Crimson Queen and her followers from the Prim, and made them turn into humans. The Crimson Queen mated with Arthur Eld, producing a demon spawn of darkness, the Crimson King. Maerlyn intend on making and believing the Crimson King is the key to destroying the Dark Tower.
    • This means that Maerlyn was responsible for the Crimson King's rise to power, the latter whom was responsible fore almost every bad thing that happened in the Dark Tower multiverse.
  • Had the Crimson Queen and her followers devour and mutilate Arthur Elds's court.
  • Taught his son Randall Flagg to becoming a sorcerer, and transformed him into a half demon half human, so that he could serve the Crimson King in helping spread chaos throughout the multiverse.
  • There is no indication that Maerlyn cares for Flagg's biological mother, Selena.
  • Created "Maerlyn's Rainbow" evil spheres that sap the life of mortal users and bring deep sorrow onto them.
  • Despite of the high Heinous Standards of the Stephen King mythos, Maerlyn stands out for being responsible for the rise of the Crimson King and Randall Flagg, the latter two who are responsible for many atrocious things throughout the cosmos. Maerlyn also stands out for causing the creation of mortal evil throughout the multiverse. Thus, one can say that Maerlyn is why the Stephen King multiverse's Heinous Standards exist to begin with.

Trivia[]

  • In the Stephen King book The Wind Through The Keyhole, there is a wizard named Maerlyn who is potrayed somewhat benevolent, as he sympathized with a young boy named Tim Ross and helped him cure his mother from his sickness. However, this isn't preventing, as the author of the Dark Tower comics said that the comics take place in an alternate reality of the tower with Twinners, thus the Maerlyn in The Wind Through The Keyhole is not the same Maerlyn as the one from the comics.
    • Plus, the story of Maerlyn and Tim Ross is a folk-tale in Mid-World, making it nothing more than a legend and indicating the Maerlyn from The Wind Through The Keyhole does not exist.
