“ | Some people don't think they need alarms on second story windows. Think they can save a few bucks. You know. And still be safe. Another way they save money is they don't hook up the alarm to the phone line. So the bell rings but the cops don't come. Or they do come but that's only after the neighbors call. | „ |
~ Lorne Malvo |
Lorne Malvo is the main antagonist of the first season of the television series Fargo. He is a manipulative hitman from Reno, Nevada, who passes through Bemidji, Minnesota. While he is there, he influences a put-upon salesman, Lester Nygaard, with his malice and violence.
He was portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He went after the man, Phil McCormick, on the orders of his boss, Mr. Rundle. He dragged him out of the workplace and tied him in his car, naked. After hitting a deer on the way and crashing the car, Phil escapes but nonetheless freezes to death.
- Killed Lester's bully, Sam Hess, at his shop, even after making a joke about killing Sam, and Lester denied taking it seriously.
- When Lester planned to pin the murder of his wife and the police chief, Vern Thurman, arrived early, Malvo kills Vern when he tried to arrest Lester. He then stole Lester's car, escapes to Duluth, Minnesota, and threatened the deputy, Gus Grimly, when the latter pulled him over.
- Due to his identity being divulged by Lester after recognizing him at an event, he kills his friends not to eliminate any suspicion among his victims but just to spite Lester's cockiness.
- Owns an enormous amount of audio recordings of his victims pleading for their lives and desperately denying any ordered murder, including Lester's, which he listens for sadistic amusement.
- Massacres an entire building of workers and customers, murdering even Moses Tripoli (Hanzee Dent).
- Shows no honor for his employers, going as far as double-crossing them for his own benefit. One time, he's hired by Stavros Milos and tasked with finding his blackmailer. He succeeds in doing so, but he allies with the extortionist (later revealed as the lover of Stavros' wife) so he could later manipulate Milos into packing the money, supposedly for the ransom. After the deed is done, Lorne incapacitates the blackmailer and orchestrates a shootout to make it look like he's the culprit, ultimately getting killed by the cops in the process.
Trivia[]
- Along with Gaear Grimsrud , he is one of the two Fargo Pure Evils.
- Lorne is compared to Satan, snakes, wolves, and bears throughout the season. This is due to his nature as a predator and a corruptor. It is also implied he is a Satanist, as he says to Lou during his diner: "I tell ya, that's the best pie I've had since the Garden of Eden.".
- Lorne's death is particularly ironic, as he is caught in a bear trap, hunted down, and executed. A wolf can be seen outside his cabin as a symbol of what he once was. He was also killed by Gus, who worked with animals before becoming a police officer.
